It is possible to retrieve files off of a corrupted hard drive. (You're smart to have gotten Linux.) With that distribution (or ANY distribution) of Linux, you can access the files of the hard drive using the application "Dolphin," the Linux file manager (in case you didn't know just yet).
Back up your files to another external device, such as:

- an external hard drive

- an alternate USB flash drive or the one you have Linux stored on

or

- a DVD-R/DVD-RW disc.

You can then work with the saved files on another computer.

no i've been doing that and i've been trying to run mixcraft with a WINE emulator
but it won't load it :/

Before you install Linux, applications do not work properly. You would have to INSTALL Linux Mint for that to work, but I wouldn't suggest doing that without professional help because you might lose data. I can lead you through the process, but it might take a while depending on how well my instructions are. ._.

Also, do you happen to have the song(s) saved onto an external device that you can transfer onto another computer?

and i can directly access previous mx6 saves so im basically set :)

If you want, I can help to lead you through the steps to make a backup of all your data and install Linux Mint 15. Applications SHOULD work if you either emulate them through Wine or actually install the Linux version, but I can't guarantee absolute success. :(

Also, don't try installing Linux Mint yet. Without a FULL BACKUP, there's the potential that you could lose ALL OF YOUR DATA ON THE HARD DRIVE, so don't install just yet.

i cant anyway the hard drive is laggy so all i can do is barely access whats already on there

You said that you didn't want a computer with Windows 8 on it. I completely understand that. ._. Search a tech site, such as TigerDirect.com, Amazon.com, etcetera, to find pre-built computers with no operating system (OS) on it. You can then install any distribution of Linux onto the hard drive; in your case, Linux Mint 15.

The preceding information is only valid if you are looking to buy a new computer. XD
