Might it be true that the degree to which people respect or appreciate you is often inverse to the amount or degree to which you attempt to be kind?, or caring?

This concept (among many others) seems to have been lost on much of todays youth. Although it is also a life experience that helps one understand 'the way of things'
And everyplace is different.
Obviously when the imbalance between how you are treated and the way you attempt to treat others is great.... it feels a little hurtful. But then I suppose it unwise to "out of your way" in some circumstances to be "especially nice". To do so sets yourself up for dissappointment(?) ... I am actually curious about your thoughts on this...
..And I very much appreciate your reply..
the especially nice thing usually is because they want something they probably can't get otherwise/elsewhere.
