The power cord to my laptop snapped. Suck. I knew it was going to happen. It was flipping to battery mode more and more frequently for no reason. Today when I plugged it in... I got nothing but battery juice. Now I have to pony up $60 bucks for a new one. I looked at BestBuy and FutureShop for a power adapter and they do have universal ones... for $150 bucks! HOLY CRAP! Thanks but I think I'll spend the money and wait buy my mail box for one thanks.
Actaully, I did a hack job on the cord when I got home. I cut off the plastic cover, twisted the broken wires together and little electrical tape later and BANG-O! A nice temp cord if I ever saw one. I figured... what do I have to lose... it's broken already.
Feels good when you can fix something rather then buy a new one (although I know this is only temp). You ever fix something you thought you would have to buy a replacement for?

Yep, that's how I got almost half of my electronic equipment. Dumpster diving and self-repair.

Doing that is a bit risky...

Not really, provided the twisting is done properly and a good layer of tape is used to recover it.

That's the risky part, if it's done correctly there's nothing to worry about...

I've got boxes of random computer, video and power cables in the basement, all for building and repairing the stuff around the house.

Remember, we use to fix things when they broke, out society as a whole wants a disposable thing, sigh.. I like fixing broken things, it makes me happy, I'm also lucky enough to be mechanically inclined as to rare if ever have to bring my car to a shop YAY!
