The response to all you blind Pokemon fanboys
12 years ago
In this journal, I will reply to most of the main arguments for why some people think "Mega Pokemon" are a good idea. Keep in mind, I don't hate Mega Pokemon, but I HATE many of the reasons why many people are defending them. These are some of the dumb defenses I've seen, and what needs to be said about them.
1. It's an optional feature. You don't have to use it. Why do you care about it?
This is a dumb argument. No shit I personally don't have to use it. It's still there, and it still fucked with Pokemon in a way that they shouldn't have. The fact that this change is still there is bothersome to people. I will still see art of it. If I got the games, chances are I would face CPUs who would use them. I have to hear all the bickering back and forth about it, so much so that I feel like I have to write this journal about it.
2. But, there have been many changes to Pokemon over the years. They changed the PC system, TMs, and many things. If you don't hate those, why do you hate Mega Pokemon?
This is an even dumber argument. No shit any sort of franchize will evolve (see what I did there? >.>) as time goes on. Things change, and improvements are made. That said, there is a difference between a big change and a little change. There is also a difference between a good change and a bad change. The first step for any of you trying to use this #2 argument is to please acknowledge that those 2 facts about changes do exist. Secondly, if you cannot see that "mega evolutions" are one of the biggest changes to come to Pokemon since it was created and can acknowledge that such a big change might not sit well with everyone... you really need to just shut up. You are not welcome in this debate.
3. But they look so cool!
No they don't. All of them but Houndoom all look stupid to some degree. Some look flat out... I really don't like to use this word because I'm aware of how offensive it can be, but some of these Megas really do look retarded.
4. But, you've supported Pokemon for so long, and it has been such a good, successful franchize for so long. If it comes from them, you have to like it!
Okay, so most people who use this argument don't put it in those words exactly, but they might as well be doing so. I've seen many people who will accept whatever the Pokemon Gods decree because ALL HAIL POKEMON! It's the definition of blind brand loyalty, and if you use this argument I don't respect your opinion.
Those are the big arguments I've heard that I really can't stand. Please don't even try to defend any of them. Like I said, I don't hate the Megas. I don't really like them, and I don't like how SO MUCH emphasis is being placed on them, especially since the Megas are probably a reason why there are so few Pokemon in the new gen, but I'm not one of those who goes so far to say that it's ruined Pokemon.
And a bit off topic but... 69 Pokemon in the new gen... It's a sex thing >.>

Of the now 718 species of Pokemon, only about 27 got mega-evolutions. Which means roughly 0.037% of Pokemon have a mega-evolution.
That's pathetic. Why even bother placing so much emphasis on something that can only be used that restrictively?
More importantly, this half-assed and ultimately unfinished feature undoubtedly ate up time and effort that could have been invested into other, better content. Like, oh, I don't know, MORE POKEMON SPECIES. The new generation only ads 69 new species -- the first time a new gen has added less than 100 new species in its entire history, and is even more pathetic given that this was the generation that introduced an entire new type of Pokemon.
And that's just the Pokemon themselves. Verdicts aren't yet even out on the quality of the plot, the characters, the setting or the gameplay, but I'm sure they got put off and ultimately rushed out after the mega-evolutions took up too much of their time as well.
As for the mega-evolutions themselves, I've said on one journal already that all of the mega-evolution forms, for me, can all fit into one of two categories.
#1: Lazy and uninspired (My response: "Really? That's it?")
#2: Dumb as Hell (My response: "Dammit Game Freak! Why?!")
Most of them don't even look like different forms. They look like they're wearing accessories from that wretched dress-up section of the Gen. 4 ribbon contests.
Even Houndoom's mega-form looks like total crap if you ask me. In fact, the only one that looks A) passable, and B) different enough to actually qualify as an alternative form is Absol, and even then, that's only until i realize it looks like a ten-year-old's fan-created evolution.
So I'm with you 100% on this Luke. This was a crap idea, shame the bloody Hell on Game Freak for all the corners they cut trying wedge it in there, and here's hoping they ignore all the idiot fanboys and apologists and scrap this thing instead of trying to implement more of it again the next time around.
