A Matter of Happiness
I've been meaning to get to this, and well, I've decided to do it right now. Before I even begin, the whole point of this note is same-sex marriage. Before you start looking up Bible quotes to battle same-sex marriage, look up Matthew 7:12. Now then.
This world is not perfect. I think that we all can agree on that. In fact, some would say that this world is the furthest thing from perfect. But, at least in my opinion, there is one thing in this world that is perfect. Love. Love is one of the emotions that is the most written about because we all dream of finding that true love. So, who are you to refuse someone that chance to love another person, just because their true love is different from your definition of true love? How would you feel if someone passed a law that restricted your rights to love, your rights to happiness? In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their creator certain unalienable rights, that among these include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." As corny as it sounds, just by reading those words, tears come to my eyes. Those are some of the most powerful words in this nation's history. To deny another human being his or her right to happiness is to take away what makes them human. Do we really want to go back to the nineteenth century when slaves could not get married because they were considered property? Will we continue to treat our fellow man as a second-class citizen just because he loves another man? I like to believe that this country, this country that elected Barack Obama, a man of mixed race, as President of the United States will, someday, wake up and realize that it is fundamentally wrong to deny another human being their basic human right to happiness. I don't care if your religion is against it. Would a God that professes universal love really condemn someone for seeking out true love? Do you really think that a man who urges you to love thy enemy would also urge you to condemn thy fellow man to a life of solitude and loneliness?
Let's face it. Marriage does not have the best success rate. In fact, some would go so far as to say that any marriage has only a fifty percent chance of working out. Are you so cruel as to deny another human being the right to even try to take that chance? In a world where "one-night stands" are an all too common occurrence, do you have any right to deny true love in whatever form it comes? Do those "one-night stands" and two week marriages really sanctify marriage more than a marriage built on the basis of true love? If you are saying 'yes" right now, you need to take a serious look at your beliefs and find the fundamental error that you have made. I urge you to rectify that error as soon as possible and start seeing that just because two people are in love doesn't mean that you can't fall in love with your true love. Right now, many people are in "traditional" marriages only because society has forced them to hide who they really are. Can you even imagine having to live a lie, a lie to your spouse, your family, and worst of all, to yourself? Personally, I find it absolutely disgusting that I should even have to type out this note, because, in my opinion, the pursuit of true love is a basic human right that no one should ever even consider abridging.
That is the end of my rant.
