So, apparently we Dutch people made the news for being colonial racists.
Yes, black Pete looks like a negro and all of that. I have a few black friends, whom I discussed this with,
yes, they have had children call them black pete on occasion, but they dont find it rasict.
One told me that he actualy enjoyed the fact the character is very populair and loved by kids, and quite a few of my friends see the Pete's as employees of Sinterklaas.
Which brings me to the following point;
If "Sinterklaas" is rasict, then so is thanksgiving.
Indians mourn this day because it was the beginning of the end for their culture.
Yes, with thanksgiving, we dont have people dressed as indians, giving food away, but its -EXACTLY- the same thing. (not to mention all those indian movies where they are badly depicted, or children dress as indian)
Next point, perhaps many havent noticed, but Santa Claus originated from Sinterklaas, so this is as much rasist as "Sinterklaas".
Yes, Santa doesnt use black people to do his workies, but he uses rather small people.
I find that as much rasist to people who happened to be hight challenged as black Pete is to black people.
The given fact that people find it racist tells me more about how people regard black people more than anything else.
Yes when I was a kid, I asked a black person a few times if he was black Pete, did I do this because of racism, or because I wanted to meet a real black Pete, out of curiosity.
back then I didnt know racism as I know it is, can you blame me.
I find sinterklaas a good celebration to actualy discuss these things that are very sensitive for some people.
Each culture has something that can be seen racist, or something else that can offend others.
How you handle such celebration is up to you.
I love the character Black Pete, as he is gentle and sharing, and I dont consider black Pete a slave, it is an employee, much as anyone else who works.
When Ford had their factories in detroit, and lots of black people worked there in similar outfits, that doesnt make them slaves either.
Just stop this shenanigans already about racism.
Everyone is equal and I hold equality in high regard.
Equality doesnt mean we are the same, we are different, but no one is better than someone else.
