(at least for furries)
You have the main city where you're always safe (FA), but when you leave the city walls, you have to battle with evil creatures that you must fight off to survive.
You may meet some friendly people along the way, and make some new friends. But you may also find some that have left the city walls and stayed there. You might find a dead corpse of a past adventurer of the likes of you that met their untimely end. Or maybe someone that might need your help to get back.
You will have to fight in order to see the good shduphs. Explore deep caves and dark mines.
But there are other cities out there as well. Other places of (relative) safety. Some of the locals might not be fond of you, but you could get along.
And then, when you return, you can tell your friends of the things you've seen, what you've found, etc. And you can rest.
