-RANT- retail jobs

ღ~ ☾їηηїε sαys ~ღ Okay so I work at a purse kiosk. Right now the only other employee other than me is too 'sick' to work and can't work for the rest of the week. This means that I am working long shifts every single day this week and possibly next week to cover her shifts. (Did I mention she also got another job at a trendy clothes store last week?) I'll be working with my manager all day every single day. Luckily she has decided to hire two new people finally so my headache does have an end in sight. Possibly 2 - 3 weeks down the road but it'll come.
ANYWAY. Now the part that sparked rage in me today.
Today I greeted a customer, "Hey there, how are you? Is there anything I can help you with?" and she snapped back at me "I'm just looking!" then walked to her husband, only five feet away WELL WITHIN EAR SHOT and then said loudly "That bitch thought I was fucking trying to steal from them or something blah blah blah". UM OKAY?? First of all I work in RETAIL. My job is to GREET YOU and then ASSESS YOUR NEEDS. If you're stealing it's a bonus if I catch you, but my job is BORING AS FUCK so greeting customers is the only thing I really do all day. The only people who get pissed about someone talking to them in a store are people who don't intend on buying anything and people who want to steal. So YES there was a 50% chance you were thinking about it!! I make the shelves tidy all day while pieces of shit like this lady come over and mess it all up. I KNOW where EVERYTHING is! If you don't know what you're looking for yet I can help you find it! IT'S WHAT I'M FUCKING UNDER PAID TO DO!! I know we all have days where we don't want the employee to poke her nose into our business while we shop but if she asks you how you are doing, say "fine" or "good" or be honest and say "grumpy so please give me my space". Those are ALL FINE ANSWERS! "I'M ONLY LOOKING!!" does NOT answer the question and it's just fucking rude! Chances are she's only asking because she has to. You might be a secret shopper for all she knows. She doesn't give a fuck about you or your life just as much as you don't care about hers. Let’s all remember that we're just people here. Thanks.
No, I don't hate work; I just hate the average consumer and co-workers that think work is just a game.

Sorry to hear that things have being rocky for you though, Cinnie! Though I'm sure that you'll pull through all of it. C:
Thank you! Today I'm enjoying my one day off this week and I'm feeling a little better already -hugs-
Generally when I worked in a shop try not to ask about the stuff and just saygood morning or say god its hot today or did you watch the match or something, that way you can get a conversation and get people comfortable =3
Otherwise its a feeling of buy this now which you dont want since you just want a chat =3
Still though when someone asks how you're doing, or comments on the weather or whatever, 'I'm just looking!' doesn't really count as a reply haha Honestly I'd love to work somewhere else, like the tea shop that's in the same mall. All of the staff are totally chill but really friendly and approachable, not to mention very knowledgeable. I've already tried pretty much every tea there so I feel like I'd be a good fit, but I would't be able to get the hours I need :c
So like our system is ANCIENT, it's still running Linux when the rest of the world is all touchscreens and windows, so it doesn't allow for certain transactions. So case in point today I had a customer get a prepaid VISA giftcard and some items. Logic dictates that I scan the items first then the giftcard in a separate transaction. Scanning the VISA first would automatic give the system a brain fart and prevent me from completing the sale thinking I'm using the VISA as the tender (?).
So I explain it to her and she doesn't look happy but goes along with it. So I go to ring up the VISA and she asks for a pack of cigarettes as well. I mention it won't let me and I'm about to explain why when she snaps at me " NEVER MIND, JUST FORGET IT." I ring up the card and she snatches the receipt and storms out the door. Me and another customer exchange glances, then proceed to have ourselves a chuckle over it.
I think my worst day was this gentlemen giving me hell over 30 cents on a pack of beer. Our store can't give discounts or change prices on alcohol and cigarettes because they are vendor products. Basically the supplier sets the price. Supposedly, this fellow was angry over 30 cents because the old manager (who walked out on me my first day on the register) had been giving him "discounts" on the beer. He had himself an nice little fit then left angry. There are some funny sides though, I'm notorious for carding everyone even if they are older folks (I can't even be too careful with customers since our other store got busted for selling beer to a minor). I carded a cop in full uniform for a pack of cigarettes and he had himself fit about being reminded about how old he was an so forth.
I think I lost it after he mentioned you have to be over 21 to own a handgun in the state of Texas, but I basically said I'm upholding the law by doing so. I didn't realize when I took the job I was basically signing my life away to the state, so I can't afford to screw up. Ah the joys of retail XD
People just get pissed off at the stupidest stuff and it's only going to get worse now that Christmas approaches ;-; And with the guy who flipped over the beer, wtf it's only 30 cents!! I can't believe anyone would get worked up over that and if his argument would be 'but every penny counts' I'd be like THEN DON'T WASTE YOUR PENNIES ON BEER! I'd ID everyone too if I were you. It saves your ass from getting in a bad situation and stops kids from getting into trouble.
My things is I keep getting flirted with by old men. My co-worker has younger guys come over and chat and give her money and other sketchy stuff like that and I have to make awkward conversation with the old (and I mean like 60-70 year old) men who claim they want to marry me. I keep thinking I should start a career as an escort because I would be getting all the old man dollars. D:
Wow that is weird >.> I once got hit on by a guy and he wouldn't leave. He kept touching my hand and asking to come home with him >.> I was being polite in saying no, but he just kept at it. When he left I hid in the storage room and looked out the security window, sure enough there he was again D:> Thing is I'm not into guys (don't let my avatar fool you, I am male XD), even if I was, it wouldn't be with him XD. Sorry to say he was really goofy looking dude. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against LGBT folks (most of the family friends are LGBT and really cool people ), I'm just not comfortable with that kind of attention XD.
Can't say I wasn't flattered a bit XDDDDDDDD
