HAY WRITERS! How about a contest just for YOU!
Hello hello, writerly furs! It is time for
Writers are snubbed in this community! It’s barbaric! Criminal! But hey, writers, I love you! And am willing to back it up with an awesome contest just for you. So are you ready to set pen to paper (or, more likely, fingertips to keys) and show me what you've got?
(Note: I am doing this during Nano so that those of you who can’t seem to make it far in Nano have a more relaxed thing to write. Or, you can use this contest AS your Nano project, AND have time to edit it afterward! If you are already doing Nano, never fear; I will probably do this next year much sooner.)
~The contest starts today - 11/2/2013. Entries are due 12/26/2013 at midnight MST. If you need an extension, I will probably grant one, but it would be best to get it in on time! Please send all submissions to sacredsourcedoula at gmail dot com. Judging will begin on January 1, 2014.
~Stories are limited to a 3k minimum word requirement and a 50k maximum word requirement (poems are acceptable outside these word counts, but I much prefer narratives).
~The number of prizes will depend on how many entrants I receive. If I receive three to five entrants, there will be one grand prize winner. If I receive six to ten, there will be one grand prize winner and one runner up, and so forth. I will update you all on how many entries I've received at the deadline.
The grand prize will be an illustration of a scene from any of your stories - full color, up to three characters, background, the works. I will also feature your story on my page and hopefully garner you lots of attention and praise! These are subject to change; if I get a lot of entrants, I may add a cash prize as well for the grand prize. All qualified entrants will have their names listed on my pages, perhaps with honorable mentions, and a link to their submitted stories if available.
The runner up prizes will be one-character pinups of any character you desire. Your story will be mentioned on my page as well.
~You must use at least one of my characters in the story. The list of my characters can be found here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3318462/. There should be descriptions in each of their ref pictures, with the exception of Aissata, who has never been used in a story. Sometimes she is paired romantically with
's rhino character Daisy.
My characters do not necessarily have to be the center of the story. Some of them will be better in supporting roles, as romantic interests, etc. You may not use stories you've already written.
~You may use your own characters, canon, and universes; you can come up with a setting just for this story, or you can use my very loose worlds and fill them in.
~You may submit multiple entries.
~Write in any style you wish (first person, third, etc). Remember that only a handful of authorly legends have managed to pull off second person in any way. ;)
~My normal rules for commissions apply to any prizes.
~You may use your own characters, canon, and universes; you can come up with a setting just for this story, or you can use my very loose worlds and fill them in.
~Please use Times New Roman 12pt font, single spacing. Don’t submit huge walls of text – indents are your friends! Please put your title and name at the top. You may post your story anywhere, but I will only accept stories as entries if they are emailed to me.
~After judging, you may ask me for opinion and critique of your story. My husband and I will be the only judges.
~You MAY collaborate. I would prefer you do not commission stories for this contest, as it can lead to issues with prizes, copyright and the like.
~If you break a rule, I will try to let you know as soon as possible so you have time to fix it.
~I am a bit of a stickler about spelling, grammar, and sentence structure! This will definitely play into who wins. Having someone proof it for you is always a good idea!
~Other things I take into account: plot, conflict, atmosphere, description, psychological and emotional depth / exploration of characters, pacing, twists, etc.
~I will not separate PG and erotic entries. I am far more likely to select a story that is not pure erotica; I prefer stories with plots that explore the characters or have lots of adventure. Sex is fine, of course; but please try to use it as a plot device rather than a plot. Please do not use any extreme fetishes whatsoever; note me with questions.
~Please read the descriptions and stick to them as best you can. Many of my characters have flexible sexuality, but some (like Tegan) never go outside their specified preference.
~I have prompts, but would prefer you to come up with a story on your own! You may also note me at any time if you need help brainstorming or have a question about a character.
~If you are more comfortable with fanfiction, that is okay - but I might not pick you if I don't know anything about the fandom. Best stick to original universes (excepting the My Little Pony one, of course).
Please comment or note here with any questions!! Good luck everyone!

Okay, that's boring! What about the prizes??

Hmmm... what to write...
Or would you be interested in seeing your characters have an adventure in a Middle-Earth/World of Warcraft/Dungeons-and-Dragons-style fantasy world?
Is the contest limited to just one entry per writer?
Oh a couple questions, when submitting it and we email it to you, in the subject line we put fA contest entry then in the body our fA name and attach the files? Just want to make sure so no mix ups or anything.
I would love to have that illustration though... ;-; I'll think about it and try and enter~
2) Just weird fetishes, violence for violence's sake (if that makes sense) that sort of thing. Everything else is fair game in my opinion.
3) Go nuts!
4) Not really, if I'm not reading general literature I'm reading sci fi and fantasy. Mystery, psychological thriller, and historical fiction all melt my butter too! A little dysfunctional romance never hurt anyone either.
5) Sexual tension is all fine and dandy with me. It seems you have the gift of subtlety and discretion, so I'll leave it in your capable hands. ^^
"Astrid really is cute, isn't she? I'm really bummed I haven't had a chance to draw or use her much. She was designed as something of a socialite, the type who is full of social graces but who has something very wrong in her life. Folks like that always make for interesting stories because they inevitably make a scene, fall apart, commit suicide, run away to Majorca, or kill their business mogul husbands.
Astrid is a beautiful mess, a big diamond with a dead spot in the middle. My favorite book of all time is The Hours; that is the essence of the type of story I like to read. I have a background in psychology and love to really dig in to the marrow of a character like that; which is why I'm having this contest because I simply don't have time to write much anymore. The Hours was made into a great movie starring Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep; it would be a great leaping off point to discover the themes I had in mind when I created the character - being haunted, ennui and emptiness, but always with the possibility of redemption."
I hope that helps!
I wish everyone good luck with their entries! ^,...,^
The end.
That's how far my creativity goes when it comes to writing. XD
I worked so hard. D;
As for your questions:
1) I think my characters are flexible enough to fit into a variety of worlds and situations, so go nuts! I'm excited to hear more about these countries of yours.
2) I prefer authors to play to their strengths. Some people can take a simple love story and make it sing, and some people are more suited to sweeping epics that involve deep plots and lots of characters. I will encourage everyone to write in the way they're most comfortable; it makes for better stories, and encourages people to really let go of their insecurities and write what they want to write.
3) As long as it doesn't involve fetishy stuff that creeps me out, I'm pretty game for anything. I can enjoy a very wide variety of stories.
4) I would LOVE to see it set at a time other than the present. No worries there.
5) The things I tend to be most attracted to in stories are dysfunction - whether personal, relational, professional, political, whatever. I love psychologically interesting characters. I love drama and conflict. I love romance, whether it's simple or fraught with destructive issues. I love adventure and travel. Really, I'm not hard to please - if you have a story and can tell it well, I am excited to read it!!
Although it will be difficult with my computer currently sitting in a box in a trailer in Anchorage while I'm still down here in Austin... But I'll have all my stuff set back up long before Boxing Day, so that's good! :D
However, give my writing a read if you feel like it. I am particularly proud of the parts of the Viking Tale I have completed this far.
My latest piece of poetry is not uploaded yet because i want to commission an artist with an illustration to go with it once i got some cash to spare.
At any rate, this is a really excellent thing to offer for us writers.
o/ *raises hand* Questions!
1) Should the stories be clean, or can dirty times be involved? If so, what are the limits? I have my own that I won't go near to be sure, but I wanted to make sure I didn't cross any of yours.
2) Can it be a chapter 1/To Be Continued story and still be elligible, or does it have to be a stand-alone?
3) I often like Film Noir style Romantic Storywriting, which is a similar writing style to Sin City graphic novels or the old Humphry Bogart novies. Basically, first-person present-tense with a gritty sort of feel and occasional violence.
a) Is this okay?
b) If I go with this style, can I request that the picture (if I win) be in black and white style, fitting with the theme?
1) Dirty is fine. I would prefer people stay away from fetish-driven content, just to be on the safe side.. if you have a question about specific content you can PM me.
2) I would prefer finished stories, but I won't reject to be continued stories.
3) I studied film noir extensively in college, so am more than happy to have you explore such a theme! And yes, of course we could do that :D
