Oooooooh, that was so not a good idea. ;~;

Kay. Some of you who know me personally know I've been on this really fucked up horror movie kick. Started about the end of August and its included The Descent 1 and 2, World War Z, The Cabin in the Woods, The Fly 1 and 2, and that's just a few to name. Cabin in the Woods was actually spectacular enough I watched the last half of it about 12 times as background noise while I was doing other things around the house. But its motha-fuckin' Joss Wheedon, so you cant be surprised it was epic.
Being a man of variety, I looked up a few of the top 10 listings online. I stumbled across Martyrs, and the blurb writ by this movie critic specifically kept it brisk so as not to spoil anything.
Just like telling me to NOT do something immediately assuring me I'll very likely do it anyways, withholding information from me immediately triggers curiosity. Further, it was #1 on this listing, so ... I downloaded it and gave it a shot.
Pass. Just... No.
Seriously, if horror flicks are something that's curiosity to you, fine, look it up, I'm not elaborating on the gritty, bloody, psychotic details beyond this; it focuses on kidnapping and bringing women (specifically, women) RIGHT to the edge of death after weeks of protracted and slowly escalated torture and suffering so as to breach the barrier of the afterlife WHILE they're still alive so as to describe of the visions they see.
Horror movies are usually good because they keep you guessing all the way through. They give you the HOPE that at least one of the cast will survive to the end.
This film starts with little. By halfway through, it gives you no hope at all. There's a scene where the main character is doused with chloroform and the screen goes black. The only thought that wafted across the brainpan was "... I can turn this off now... Because I know exactly what is going to happen and I know its going to be unfathomably horrible..."
I watched it. All of it. I suppose on some level both to slake my curiosity as well as a test of my intestinal fortitude.
I'm still quivering.
One part from abhorrence, the other from just being plain SEETHING MAD that this was something made for people's "entertainment". My only consolation is I didn't pay for this waste of my time and purged it from my computer the MOMENT I was finished with it. XU
*deep breath* ... I'm going to pour myself some wine, slip into my fave satin loincloth, give myself a hug, put on Wreck it Ralph while I art, and try to forget the past hour and change of my life. >.<
... Matter of fact, I think I'm going to watch nothing but Disney films for a month.

Another really good movie that you might watch would be Dragonheart, it's a classic movie.
And on the latter point, Dragonheart? If I recall correctly, that was with Sean Connery voicing the dragon? I saw that twice, when I was a wee crotch-sprout. :D
As to Dragonheart, yes, Sean Connery lent his voice to Draco, the dragon. The origional is fantastic, but the sequel is rather terrible. I first saw it when I was at my granddad's for the summer. He was adamant that he would teach me about honor and nobility, and I do try to live up to the ideals that he saw fit to instill upon me. I can almost remember the "Old Code" word for word, even after all these years.
Very ironic you put it that way. The ending of MARTYRS is a cry for mercy from that very attitude. Despite being incredibly brutal and dark, the film's ultimate message is that religion is more harmful to humanity than helpful.
The American remake comes from the producers of TWILIGHT and will be directed by Eric Stamm, director of "The Last Exorcist.
For the record, the film isn't sadistic torture for its own sake (unlike the HOSTEL or SAW movies); it has a very clear anti-religion message that I think not only justifies the awfulness of it all but, if you think about what has been done in the name of religion, it's quite tame by comparison. It's just that the film wants you to THINK, and people don't like to think when they watch horror films.

Thank you, I needed a good belly laugh. ^_^
There is an odd thing humans engage in where they attempt to explore the depths of their own inner darkness for whatever reason; to express the more brutal and harsh parts of their nature in some tangible form. I think this is not necessarily a bad thing, but I also think it is an individual one... no one person has within them a darkness others can understand. Each person has to come to terms with their own personal demons. When you attempt to show those demons to other people, that's where people start to wonder what the hell is wrong with you.
I often wonder what it is that is going through the minds of people capable of making such movies; of literally expressing their sickness on a screen or in a book. Like the guy writing the "Game of Thrones" series, where so far everyone good has been either killed, turned into some sort of monster or made to suffer. I also wonder what type of person it takes to want to be an actor in these kinds of things... to be willing to even pretend like someone has stripped off all your skin is pretty hardcore.
As an offering of something completely opposite, I give you a "poledancing" kitten. I hope it makes you smile.

Horror, to me, has always been the suspense. You know the monster's there, you just don't know where. You just see bits and pieces of it at a glance as it drags off its next victim, never knowing exactly where it is through the whole movie, until towards the end. Then you see it coming in all its glory, and you just know the characters are up shit creek without a paddle.
But there's still hope. There's still something there to cheer for, to make you believe they can still get out of this alive. Then they start dying, one by one, until only one or two of them are left, and those are the ones that live. Barely.
Don't get me started on ALIEN 3 though, that was not an Alien movie to me.

The thing these films manage is squick me and drive my libido down to zero. Horror is not equal to nausea!
