My Little Pony Season 4 premiere review
After over 10 months of waiting, anticipation, drama and hype Friendship is Magic's 4th season finally came and went. And now that I've finished jumping up and down and squeeing all over myself I'm going to share my thoughts on this long awaited event. I will ATTEMPT to avoid spoilers for those who haven't seen the episodes yet but I can't be certain something won't slip. So consider that your warning before we begin.
The Good:
- The intro/theme remained much the same with only a few, VERY welcome additions. The theme itself may have been updated slightly but I personally didn't notice so take that with a grain of salt.
- Twilight is, thankfully, still the same adorkable little pony we all know and love. Personally I was very much for Twilicorn once the idea sank in but hopfully seeing that she's still her old self, only with wings and a title, will reassure some of the naysayers. Not all...just some.
- This episode gave us a peak into the history of, not only Celestia and Luna, but the Element's of Harmony themselves, simultaiously shattering hundreds of head canons and fan theorys while at the same time opening the door to all new possiblities.
- John de Lancie once again brings his A-game with Discord. Not only showing the spirit of chaos is still the playful, almost Loki-esque trickster fans fell in love with but that his 'reformation' was quite genuine.
- This is more of a personal thing, but my favorite thing about the episode was Celestia. Ol' Sunbutt is probaly one of my favorite charaters and this episode, I believe, fleshed out her character more than any other. We got to see her as her usual serene self but we also saw her push her mask of royalty aside to show her true self. Major props to Nicole Oliver for her voice work in this episode.
The Bad:
- While the story itself was well thought out and well executed, even setting up for what looks like a season-spanning story, there were some flaws. The standard 'friends' splitting up plot came and went so fast I almost got whiplash and only served the purpose of padding the episode a few minutes. Also, as I've come to expect in the series, there was a bit of cheesy dialogue that made me roll my eyes.
- A nitpick more than anything but the explaination for Celestia and Luna's absense during the episode bugged me a little. Not so much that it ruined it by any means just a little minor annoyance. As I've said the two are some of my favorite characters and it's always been a pet peeve of mine, in either the show or in fanworks, when the two are shoved out of the story. Granted it's necessary sometimes but I just felt it wasn't handled as well as I would have liked here.
So, that's my thoughts. Agree, disagree or outright ignore at your leisure. At the end of the day this was a phenomenal start and I'm very much looking forward to what comes next for my favorite equines.
