how do you feel about...

canceling commissions? and when i say that, i mean that no money has been exchanged, nothing whatsoever. a person came to me for some pinup commissions on tumblr a while ago, and i just havent had an inspiration. i sent them a few thumbnails etc, and we altered what they wanted a few times. but i just havent been able to build up enough steam between work and stress to do them, and so i finally sent them an email telling them that the commission was off, and i would be happy to refer them to some better artists who could actually get the work done in time for them. it was a gift for a friend, which is why i felt so bad waiting. i didnt want to keep them waiting any more, so i pulled the plug. no money was exchanged, just ideas.
if you were that commissioner, how would you feel? and would you do the same thing in my position? i just feel like crap doing t, but i would feel even worse with it sitting on my shoulders and all these months with nothing to show for it.

it might be a hassle if it were a gift with time constraints, but I certainly wouldn't hold any animosity towards the artist.
art is a fickle mistress, prone to highs and lows, and you cant always predict when you'll have time or confidence to tackle a piece
and the weight of responsibility to the commissioner only grows over time, which adds pressure and negative feelings to the commission
and it becomes merely an obligation to be completed rather than a piece of art to be created.
Buuuuut.... if they are gonna refer to another artist who can do it that be a bit more better for the commissioner in a way. c:
How would you feel if an artist gave you a bad picture because they couldn't face up to the fact that they weren't the artist for you~?
Honestly I think you did the right thing here! I've had to cancel a commission or two in the past (before money has been exchanged) because I really and truly felt that I wasn't the right artist for them. They wanted things that were not only outside of my comfort zone, but also outside of any comfort zone I really wanted to make for myself any time soon x3 Things that I just didn't have any interest in and though they had good intentions it comes down to how well you think you'll be able to serve their needs I guess. uwu
So when it comes down to it, I think it's fair to drop commissions with proper communication and good reason. It's better than having a piece in your gallery that you aren't happy with and having an unsatisfied commissioner.
What you did was very courteous and a good move
