Basically, the excuse they gave in killing off Brian is that they wanted to "shake up the status quo" of the family and make bring in a new formula, via introducing a new character to replace Brian. The voice actor for Brian didn't quit or anything, since Brian's actor also voices Stewie and Peter and also directs the show; Seth McFarlane himself.

I'm not sure what is excatly true. I heard from one side that Seth killed off Brian because he was tired of doing the voice. I mean.. he does so many voices in his shows, it's insane. The other side is saying that he's been replaced by a dog named Vin or Vinny. And that sometime in this same season, Stewie is going to bring Brian back. That's all I know, but I know people are trying to get Seth to go to a live interview to actually announce why he killed off Brian. I watched the episode and I cried. :(

Yeah looking around myself and everything just seems very confusing. Specially the fact that they went a got a new talking dog that to me does not sound or act funny at all as Brain did. :/ I mean really. If you're long time pet just pasted away tragic or not I wouldn't be ready to move on that fast to "Ok time for a new Family dog" thing XP Bah whatever it is I hope they bring back Brain.

Well, there's alot and I mean alot of fans not happy. Because alot of people love Brian and Stewie, especially their funny adventure episodes together. I know there's alot of petitions going around to bring Brian back. I just seriously can not imagine family guy without Brian. =/

well from what I read about future episodes they're bringing him back they did this to make the thanksgiving episode sad it was basically
"Happy thanksgiving from the family guy staff P.S. Fuck you" cause they also make the holiday episodes of american dad perposly depressing just cause they can and I even saw a pic of brian in a up coming episode "they're blaaaaaack" which brings back cleavland and family back to the show

I hope so. Cause the "New Dog Vinny" doesn't seem very interesting at all other then he's another talking dog..

I really stopped like family guy when all the characters just turned into 1 note characters and that was like in 07 I knew about brian's death from ifunny so I looked into it and the producer of the show basically lied in a interview saying he's gone for good I think the remaining episodes of 2013 will have vinny but brian makes a come back in 2014 but see I really hate for holiday episodes they make them depressing cause it's not cool

yea...not a big fan of him either. stewie and brian where just...so awesome together! now who will sing duos!?!?! D:>

News on Sunday that despite the fact that Brian was a main character for years and the show's general lack of realistic plots, it seemed a more plausible story line for the Griffins' family pet to die than one of the Griffins. “It seemed more in the realm of reality that a dog would get hit by a car,” he said, adding, “As much as we love Brian, and as much as everyone loves their pets, we felt it would be more traumatic to lose one of the kids.”

SHAKE THINGS UP- “Family Guy” producers said it was time for a change, and the death of the Griffins' family pet was reportedly at the top of their morbid to-do list. “This was an idea that got pitched in the writers' room, and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up,” he said. “We started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters."

CAST APPROVED- Despite losing a key character, members of the “Family Guy” team reportedly approved of including the shocking death in the series latest episode. “I think they were glad it wasn’t them,” said Callaghan, who confirmed the cast (specifically, voice actors Mila Kunis and Seth Green) was still saddened by the plot twist. “I think they were pretty stunned this far into the show,” he added.
