What do you think of this song?
M.I.A. said this about the song: " I was going to get patties at my local and just thinking that really the worst thing that anyone can say [to someone these days] is some shit like: ”What I wanna do is come and get your money.” People don’t really feel like immigrants or refugees contribute to culture in any way. That they’re just leeches that suck from whatever. So in the song I say All I wanna do is [sound of gun shooting and reloading, cash register opening] and take your money. I did it in sound effects. It’s up to you how you want to interpret. America is so obsessed with money, I’m sure they’ll get it. "
Is it supposed to be a parody/critique of what Americans think of immigrants, is she a gangster/hustler, is she full of crap?
It also has a sample from the clash song Straight to Hell, which is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straig.....to_Hell_(song)
[EDIT]
You know, after a lot of thinking, I went from:
"hmm, this is catchy but why is the chorus censored" to
"wow, after reading what's about, this is pretty controversial and kind of awesome" to
"you know what? This song is kind of stupid and MIA is stupid" to
"actually, you know maybe this song isn't bad, in fact, maybe it is really cool"
"and hey, this clash song is really something"

wait crap you said the same thing. I'M COPYRIGHTING THIS.
Also they have to be males.
FUCK YOU
side note: i clicked on the related tabs and found a sped up version of the song. I don't know why I find like every song hilarious when it's sped up :( It never gets old for me.
SLOW=COOL

it was funny for seeing a packed show all raise their "guns" in the air when the corus came up.
also i think she is full of shit, in that quote she dosnt even make a saline point. if the worst thing you can think of to say to someone is i wanna come get ya monies, you must not be thinking too hard. i agree that most of America is obsessed with money, and the "status" it brings. does this song some how satirise it? fuck no.
I dunno, maybe she's trying to make a point but not making it?
also, i dont think the songs lyrics back up it being satire, i know she claims she did it in the sound effects, but they are not something that can be taken many ways. it sounds more like a sort of slice of life song from the lyrics.
deep meaning or not, i still enjoy the song XD
I like how Bun B put it though,
"BEIN' POOR IS A DISEASE, GOTTA HUSTLE UP A CURE"
It's more inspirational to poor people than gunshots and cash drawer sfx.
Hey your avatar is back to regular
I need to make more avatars...
BETTER AND STRONGER
I'm immigrant too but don't make me start a discussion -_-, mainly cause I never stop after starting
Of course, throughout the song is a sample of Straight to Hell, by The Clash, which is a song essentially about Americans doing this kind of shit to Vietnam. So, there's more to it than irony if you look deep enough. I think ultimately it's about hypocrisy and racism.
also, some of you may want to read up on MIA and gain some perspective on where in the world she is coming from and why she would write a song like this
"hmm, this is catchy but why is the chorus censored" to
"wow, after reading what's about, this is pretty controversial and kind of awesome" to
"you know what? This song is kind of stupid and MIA is stupid" to
"actually, you know maybe this song isn't bad, in fact, maybe it is really cool"
"and hey, this clash song is really something"
(I'm gonna add that to my journal)
Anyway, kudos to MIA for making me think a lot about a song.
I really like the way she used the sample in that song. It's kind of like a webcomic that has an extra joke in the alt-text, like a hidden punchline or a little extra hint at the intended tone. She uses that technique a lot on her latest album, which is cool, and I think the frequency of the music-borrowing is kind of a statement on its own.
It's really easy to misinterpret this song when you haven't heard her other music, and I think a lot of people are doing that right now. Because Pineapple Express used the song so prominently and the popularity of the track exploded, for many people it was the first material they've ever heard from her.
Check out Sunshowers if you haven't heard it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knQuxZj9rTA
I think the song starts to lose its focus around the third chorus. UH. As for the song's initial message, it sounds like it's using fear to paint illegal immigrants or immigrants in general as violent criminals when most of the time, they just end up working in privately-owned construction corps and assembly plants/factories and things of that nature where the management isn't very mindful of security. Office jobs, accountancy and all that. Uh. I dunno. Sooo I guess what I'm saying is, the song is inaccurate and seems to touch on sensitive topics and sounds catchy, but I guess couldn't put together the meanings as cohesively without like. I guess it'd sacrifice some other facet of the song's image? Cause I'm negative, I don't think the song is gonna reach people that would probably need to hear it, but wellll. A lot of people already have their minds made up I guess? ;.;
*ramble*
The song's pace makes me think of drugs, or a tranquilized haze.
and everything in the song seems pretty exaggerated, I dunno I like it!
My understanding is she had sort of a rough life, and that this song (and all of her other ones) are sort of just samples of what kinds of things she thinks about.
I think she has a point, she jut sucks at trying to explain it. The sample is done well, the delivery of the verse lyrics is interesting, the chorus is surprising and funny and catchy as a motherfucker, I dunno.
OF COURSE YOU LIKE MIA YOR WHIET
I dunno I haven't eve heard her other music, this one song just grabbed me and demanded all my attention for some reason
I fear some people like it while missing the sarcasm. You know the kind of people. D:
WHAT IT SAYS
MINE
in that interview she said that americans are obsessed with money and so they'll get it...seems like more sarcasm and disdain for western culture
it's a little stronger of an opinion than I have, but I like her for making kind of a statement about immigrants
i think teachers like to think too much, but its an interesting idea.
i don't know what she is personally but all I know is that she is fashionable and sucks live :x
That's a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

gotta stick up for your people though
