Hello

You're fighting the weight of the world, but no one can save you this time
Hi. what's up?
Get FA+ |
there's not enough of it...especially not around here! ah'm working on it though C:
indeed, sudden and sharp increase from 0-1 haha
as for me? working on a pic, wishing i could be working on my game as well haha
I NEED MORE ARMS
commercial game? well, now it's likely to be...it started out as a fangame but got shut down by the IP holders riiiight before release X: BUT the creator of the show joined our team so now we get new characters and an authentic style to go with it! This is gonna be so fun C:
what kind of game is it? it's a fighting game, but it stars a cast of characters y'would never imagine in a serious entry to the genre xD
I think the closest to legit i've seen was this hilarious parody fighter called super strip fighter 4 (or was it just strip fighter?) seemed to have FADC's and everything. O: It used the same engine we were using, too. Dat crappy old Fighter Maker 2002. (go ahead and try it out! though we regularly took a verbal dump on the engine's limitations, what you'd want to do with it should be completely manageable!)
Because of this it was a double edged sword hahaha.
It's actually very easy to work with initially, but it was because of the more complicated things (A LOT OF our design required lots of special interaction) that we started rubbing against the limits of it xD and yeah, start out with a few very simple sketches.. at least get the height/proportions down for your main fighter, then work from there. Afterwards you can worry about getting some better art in there O:
Actually, I would probably just make my own engine. It's certainly a trade off since I have to worry about optimization and such, but on the other hand I know what I'm getting and I can custom fit it to my needs.
How many man hours (man months?) went into your game before it was canned? I'm sure you put a ton of time into this new iteration, but I'm curious to compare to the versions I've seen in videos and such.
Make your own engine? wowzah, that is a super power i wish i had hahaha. It will certainly take much longer to actually start on the game BUT having your own custom tools is just tooooo much of a benefit, especially if you have a clear idea of waht you want to make! C:
I personally worked on the game all day every day non-stop. it got to the point where everyone on the team begged me to stop and fuggin get something to eat, so i tried to set wed. as my "take a break day"
in TWO WEEKS i ended up spending every wed. doing more work than any other day. it was like trying to pinch a hose shut! it couldn't be held back! hahahah.
Most of the progress occurred when we had our full QA team, though. The updates were insanely fast, They had very well informed and tested direction going into each patch. Since fighters are extremely iterative and the changes/updates are HIGHLY based on testing and feedback, the moment the leak happened and we had to shoot all of our testers in the face, development (relatively) slowed to a painful crawl...hell, we were practically going backwards for a bit due to the morale shattering.
I still worked on it every day, though.. it was just much harder to test changes when i now had to wait for certain people to be on to do very isolated testing, so updates were far more spread out. Near the end our timing synched up and we were reaching an alright rhythm, then very suddenly the hasbrolice kicked in the windows and took us apart haha
since a whole universe is being built from scratch this time, we are waaay behind where we were the first time anyone saw our previous game. Because of this, some of my jobs can't really be done yet xD
I did this happily without pay before, but when the universe is more fleshed out AND if we manage to kickstart this? i'm certain productivity across the board will be much higher than ever before! i don't think any of our bodies are ready hahaha
I'm working on a JRPG. Since I'm on my own, I wanted to make sure I kept things simple. And well, I didn't quite succeed at that, I like things to be... complete. It's not episodic, it's not a grindfest, it's not a bare 6h long. And it's not easy to design, produce and program while keeping a regular job :P But you know, when you have the passion, nothing else to do really.
That's cool though, the passion is very real and it's always exciting to see people who actually have it. Nothing's going to stop you, no matter how long it takes or how hard it gets! you will complete this thing, and someone out there is going to experience it! I live by that.
So what are stuff you would have liked to complete? It sounds like you have some regrets about projects you started but couldn't finish for one reason or another.
I've been on several teams for different games and mods for half-life 1 and 2
nobody has any passion...even fewer actually have the skills for their hired job.
I also tried to start a website and a comic about 2 or 3 times, as well as several flash series collaborations, a flash tutorial blog, and some other stuff i'll remember after hitting post. on the outside i seem like a complete failure, unable to finish a damn thing, but from this end it's just a frustrating string of bad timing, and even worse development teams. I would very much like to complete things, but a lot of potential is lost when anything is developed alone. I have always believed that y'kinda need a group of people to slap you and eachother around a bit until something universally good comes from it. On the flipside, sometimes you really do have to at least get something started your damn self because nobody else would xD
I believe in this team, though. This is the farthest i've ever gotten on anything, and i'm finally with people who have at least somewhat comparable levels of passion.
But it does seem like you're a part of something good though, considering how far you got on the first game. I know a few dropped after that, but I suppose that only makes the resolve of the remaining people stronger in a way.
i like you.
you understand the struggle, and desire real quality in your work.
i wish you much luck on your work, when you do complete that dream project/find your dream team y'better melt some faces!
;P My dream project...
I have a dream commercial project, unrelated to the fighting game. But it was too ambitious for a first game. So happy I didn't start with that, I couldn't have financed it properly, but even then, it's something I'd have to dedicate all my time on, full concentration. We all have that dream project in us I guess.
Do you think about "life after your fighting game"?
>look to older games for inspiration to design within said limitations
UNNNGHHHHHH the developer in me just shot stick, sticky ropes all over the place brb i need a couple blankets
There is very real artistic value in being able to work within limitations of something. It requires more of a creative approach from everyone involved to fit as much color, sound, and just overall life into their projects.
With such limitless power, nowadays games look way better, but almost all of them lack soul.
wait where was I? I just...that probably was completely off topic there. oh yeah! dream project!
I am curious XD are you able to summarize your dream project? like, what type of game would it be? is there anything that plays like it?
for me? i'd imagine life after this fighting game (or rather, the initial release of this fighting game) will be updates to the fighting game and maintaining a community within it. However long that lasts, I am very unsure.
however, since we own these characters this time...we can go anywhere with them, from comics and animation, to other genres of games starring them.
My dream project is actually one my friend and i have been poking at in the background since HS. Some aspects of its design are very difficult to get working in a multiplayer environment so we needed to work on other things before diving into this one. what we learn from this project will go into that one many years down the line.
Dream project: I want to make a game about meaningful choices. Right now, there are few games where the choices you make actually have an impact. Walking Dead was hailed for its "choices", but those became really transparent to me early on in the game, despite having only played it once. They conceived it so that choices don't matter all that much, it's still a linear narrative and that's something I want to iterate upon. I heard Mass Effect did that to some extent but I wasn't really satisfied by what I saw and then the ending was universally panned. I want to do stuff like a choice in your childhood impacting not only yourself, but the world around you. I want to have double the content the player will experience and have it branch not only in non linear ways, but also have choices synergise together for unexpected results. It's a pretty hefty endeavor, having everything work together, and it requires a world large enough to accommodate proper evolution. Money and time, it's always about money and time. But otherwise, it's probably a JRPG, maybe something like Seiken Densetsu. The gameplay itself might not be revolutionary, but it's all about the presentation.
I'm really curious about where the new fighting game is going. I'm not an MLP fan, I don't get it at all, but beyond that I'm curious to see the involvement of the creator of that brand and what (she?) will bring, besides her notoriety. I'm just a guy from the outside, probably overly judgemental, but I have a tough time understand what (she?) can bring that you guys wouldn't have been able to brin on your own. Though without a doubt it's cool to be able to work with the creator of something you really love like that, and to have that level of recognition from that creator.
And I agree, sometimes it's best to wait on those dream projects to ensure that it can be as great as you imagine it to be. It sucks to approach a project just to realize you're just not good enough to execute the scope of what you have in mind, Besides, I'm sure although you're waiting, you probably still work on it, take notes from time to time about what you'd like to see or do. It'll make it all that much better.
And pokemon chainbreeding and EV training, you?
also butts.
no, seriously, that's what i'm busy with right now D: sorta.
no, butt seriously i'm bad at these. an OC must happen at some point.
oh yeah, that was a thing haha. i'm sure if i ever checked journals i'd be way annoyed by that shet as well!
I dunno. In general, I'm always busy.
and yeah, same here about always being busy...not as much as i used to be, but yeah. need to be doing something (hopefully productive!) or i freak the fack out
though seeing that stuff live always adds that nice touch of seasoning to the lawl stew <3
hopefully it's apple <3
Admittedly, I could have been more careful about how much I took, and got a lot more done to compensate.
How've you been?
I've been...all over the place!
you?
