YOU
yes, you.
what's the last thing you ate that you actively -enjoyed-?
like.. you took a bite and went, "No fucking way.." then you took another bite and went "Oooohh.. yea...." and every bite after that was like, "Whho!!! omg, YES!"
what? WHAT?! what did you eat? what can be that exciting and interactive and emotionally WHAPOW! as we say in the kitchen..
what can I make you to make you go "Oh fuck.. this dude knows what I like.."
that's all I want to know.
the first time I had anything like that, it was separate parts of one meal.. when I was 13, there was a chinese restaurant in the red light district of San Francisco called Brandy Ho's. I wanted to go there every year for my birthday because they had "popcorn rice", squid with black bean sauce and lychee nut ice cream. and going from treat to treat was like, "Woah.. omg.. OH FUCK NO THEY DIDN'T!" and then "oh shit.. I think they did.."
maybe it was my mom's german meatballs.. with the whole wheat breadcrumbs, and the caraway seeds, and the gravy thickened with a slurry of sour cream and corn starch, the egg noodles, the side of sauteed carrots in a butter honey sauce and fresh grated nutmeg..
or the first time I ever had a steamed red beet, just a round slap slathered in sweet butter..
or how the biggest deal of your birthday wasn't what you got for it, but that you could plan out a 5 course meal with mom, and she would prepare anything you wanted- no matter how bizzare or expensive or if she even knew how to make it..
that's what makes my tastebuds tick. that's why I ask you these questions.
so what's your birthday dinner? I want to know. I want to practice it for you so that on the big day, I can prepare it.

There's a few recent times I can think of. A couple weeks ago when I bit into an actual mango for the first time. A few days ago at this vegan place, they had scallion pancakes and orange chicken made from shitake mushrooms and it was wonderful. And yesterday at Saturns in Santa Cruz, they had some pretty amazing fries piled with veggies and avocado and beans and all sorts of things.
