I think I realize now why I lack the motivation to upload

~* LOOK OUT, FOLKS -- THIS IS GONNA GET TL;DR *~
(ALSO THIS JOURNAL IS IGNORING THE FACT THAT I CURRENTLY LACK SCANNER ACCESS SO CAN'T UPLOAD, ANYWAY)
Now that art is my job, I just like-...
Don't think about it as much?
I get home from work and just want to eat food and hang out with friends.
Drawing and showing people art is just the LAST THING ON MY MIND
Commercial, "professional" art is a pretty lousy job most days, honestly.
Don't get me wrong-- I love making the designs! Even posters, which I was never very enthused about before, are something I can sincerely enjoy working on, now!
And I love a lot of my coworkers, bosses, clients, etc.!
Yet, it's a job where you're just...
Sitting there, doing art, all primarily for people who have no TRUE respect or appreciation for art.
They like to ACT like they do -- the many collegiate hipsters LOVE to pretend like they understand what art is, and what being an artist is really like.
But they don't.
I have had my designs used by organizations to enter contests and, after my designs won, I realized that they got an award for THEIR ORG for "best design" or w/e, so they can display it on their walls
-- With absolutely NO credit or even a REFERENCE to the to the person who created the original image, and NOT EVEN SO MUCH AS A THUMBNAIL, NAME OR MENTION OF WHAT THAT WINNING DESIGN WAS.
So there's literally nothing saying what artist or design was worthy of a prize-- just a pretty plaque that the people who did the event get to display, even though (in my particular case) the designs created were 100% MY OWN IDEA.
They gave me the TITLE of the event, and I created the entire poster concept, 0 help from them -- so they can't even claim "well they just brought my idea to life" because IT WAS MY IDEA IN ITS ENTIRETY. 8I
Then they have the gall to ask me to enter even bigger contests to create a company's emblem, right?
Not only would I not get paid for this one, but the company in question will also:
- Re-draw the artist's image after they submit it
- Give absolutely no credit or ties to the person(s) who designed it
- Give no compensation (cash, prize, or otherwise) to the artist submitting their entry
- BUT YOUR EMPLOYER GETS A FRAMED AWARD, THANK-YOU, PRIZE, AND GETS A PRIVATE CONCERT COURTESY OF THE COMPANY!
AND THEY TOLD ME IT'D BE AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR ME, BECAUSE IT'LL LOOK GREAT ON MY RESUME!!
-- Even though, y'know, I get no credit for the design and it gets re-drawn, so I can't really use it on my resume.
^ This is my everyday
This is the everyday of TONS of artists in the professional world.
From graphic design, to character design, to animation, and more.
IT IS INFURIATING
.....
SO, YEAH
That's why I don't draw much
And why commissions are taking me so dang long
And why I feel like I shouldn't upload things, even when you guys say I should
Because art has the immediate impression of being a stressor, rather than something I enjoy
So when I go to work on commissions, I feel like it's going to be really difficult and then it'll never be good enough for you guys?
WHICH JUST MAKES ME GET SAD AND SHUT DOWN AND I PUT THE PAPER/LAPTOP/ETC. AWAY
Bwap...
It'd be awesome if I could just do commissions for a living, y'know?
I'd must rather work for people who will enjoy, use, and appreciate the pieces I put my heart and soul into.
I just feel like it's too late for me to recover my "commission artist" status, after taking SO FUCKING LONG to get the simplest of projects done. 8'''D
So, IDK
what dooooooooooo
That sounds pretty brutal though, Im sure people would even understand how hard that may be. ;;3;;
How is that even legal? Lol. XD god dang organizations. ;333;
I mean, you can still make it! If you wanna make cartoons or t-shirts or w/e your goals are then IT IS TOTALLY POSSIBLE!
You've just gotta go in to it expecting stuff like this.
Be aware that people WILL try to rip you off, use you, etc. and DON'T LET THEM, CAUSE THEY NEED YOU MORE THAN YOU NEED THEM.
But if you just want to DO ART GET PAID, and not particularly MAKE DISNEY MOVIES YEAH, then you'd probably have a lot more fun working on your own, because you can do exactly what you want and people come to you for it (instead of you having to hunt for jobs, get stepped on a ton, etc.)
AND DUDE IDK HOW COMPANIES CAN GET AWAY WITH IT SO EASILY BUT IT'S REALLY ANNOYING.
I GUESS THEY CAN JUST AFFORD BIG LAWYERS TO SNUFF OUT ANY LITTLE LAWSUITS THEY GET??
IDFKKKKK BUT IT'S ENRAGINNNGGGG
LET'S JUST TAKE OVER THE BIG COMPANIES WITH A TON OF ARTISTS SO THAT PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY APPRECIATE, HHHHHHF >BC
Geez, between this and some other stuff I've read, seems like artists/musicians get no respect from quite a few suit and tie types. I've got nothing against corporations, but when those corporations are filled with assholes...I've always got a problem with those. People who try to exploit people like this most certainly fall into that category. Blech.
But I have literally had contracts written that state "THIS SPECIFIC PERSON (BY FIRST & MIDDLE & LAST NAME) is not allowed to use THIS SPECIFIC ITEM (IN DETAIL) for THIS SPECIFIC PURPOSE (in detail)" -- and then that exact person does that exact thing, and there was literally nothing I could do about it.
Sad fact is, they have the money.
They agree to the contract because they know that, if it came down to it, you don't have the money to enforce it, and they DO have the money to hire lawyers that can wiggle them out of any penalties.
Pretty depressing reality I've had to come to terms with. 8'D
1. The thing that would've been modified was a contest my employer was advertising, and not something I had to do. Ergo, there is no obligation whatsoever for me to take part.
2. If I DID enter said contest, they aren't going to see my contract and be like "LOL YEAH OK SURE I'LL JUST SIGN THIS THING RIGHT NOW" -- they stated the rules on their site, with lots of legal mumbo-jumbo, so THAT is the contract. When you enter the contest, you are agreeing to that contract. If you don't agree to the contract, your entry goes in the trash. End of story. :v
3.) Even if it WAS part of my job, waltzing up to your employer and saying "SIGN THIS CONTRACT OR NO MORE ART" is basically just saying "FIRE ME." Because, unless you are an irreplaceable asset (which, most artists aren't considered to be, sadly) they probably aren't going to negotiate with you that way.
You'd have to appeal to them by trying to negotiate the terms of your employment, or go through a union, or etc.
In my particular situation: the only thing they ARE doing is entering my designs into pretty insignificant little contests that give them no cash/monetary reward, so I'm really not too worried about it. It's just stupid to me that the people who are MAKING said contests aren't giving the artists credit -- just the employers. When it should be "awarded to this individual, representing this employer", etc.
HOPEFULLY THAT MAKES SENSEEEEEE
