My Leaving Journal
I figured I'd probably be uploading the first leaving journal since the site came back up, so I figure I'll try to make it good.
Why should we waste it all
Buying into the same old lies?
In my journal today, I feel they lyrics from Vaporize by Broken Bells are fitting. I've had a good week to think about this, and I believe I'm just kind of done with FA. Weasyl is building up a userbase, FA is as unstable as ever, and I just don't really feel like putting up with it anymore. I strongly urge everyone that follows me to follow me over at Weasyl. If the only complaint is "there aren't enough people there" then let's just start moving over there.
My account over there is www.weasyl.com/~oneandonly Follow me, or let me know what your account is over there and I'll follow you again!
We don't have to put up with the regular crap. Move over there and post a journal here saying you moved. If we all make a small amount of effort we can make a change.
Here's some tools to help you get situated as well:
SOFT (Previously known as FenderBender)
This is a project that lets you find your friends over at Weasyl. Enter in your FA account and your Weasyl account at the top and post your following list. Help make corrections on people that changed names at weasyl and you will be helping out anyone else who moves over.
Kitashi's Art Gallery Manager:
(To get the latest version find the line that says "Size 168kb (download)" and click download.)
You will need to download Python 3 ( 32 Bit 64 Bit )
This is a tool to let you migrate your entire gallery from one art site to another. After you double click setup.py, follow Kitashis guide, you should easily be able to migrate your gallery.
Kitashi's Guide
You will need to make an API key at weasyl which can be done here. You will get a string like
OJbhcZiQlLknTp1cSXyrxuZiVeRJ6WhK8p4S5Jo3QwegSTDA
at the side of the api window, which the AGM will ask for. You can just paste it into the console.
AGM is a good tool for managing your art gallery and I've also used it to download other peoples entire galleries to my hard drive.
I'm working on a version that you won't have to install python or run setup before running it. Dunno if I will ever get it working though.
If you don't feel like setting this up, you can do it a more manual way with a plugin called Waxpost
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/.....l=en&gl=US
It's a chome plugin. You just go to the pictures you want to transfer over in your gallery and click the Weasyl logo in the address bar and it will let you transfer over one picture at a time. It will still be much easier than doing it manually and I've heard good reviews about it.
Ways to get others to join Weasyl:
Spread the word!
This is probably one of the easiest way to get new members. Make a journal about it. Tell people you will be using it as your main account, ask people to join you over there, even send invites! Every little bit helps.
Be a little forceful:
Don't go die hard "Join this site or else" or "LULZ U ARNT HERE." You might scare people away.
Instead, start linking every submission to the submission on Weasyl. Start hosting Weasyl only raffles, Even go as far as to post the small version of your submission here, and link the full version to Weasyl. That way you're not forcing people to join, but you're slowly making it harder to use the site as it is. (This is how an actual company makes changes to their services)
Don't post placeholders that link to Weasyl. They can get you for spam that way.
Hopefully these tools will help at least someone. We have alternatives. Let's put them to use!
A little more background for those interested:
I've been putting up with this site actively for four years. I don't feel like I'm enjoying it here because nothing has changed. I don't want to be around the site drama anymore. There was a time that I actually had respect for the admins here. I cared about the site, I tried to be supportive of the people running, but after a while, I realized that nothing was changing. The drama kept happening. It still takes someone hacking the site to motivate the people running it to bring a change (Just look at the "Great Hack of 2010" which I witnessed firsthand), and no one wants to deal with improving it. I've been here 4 years and the biggest change to the site has been the news bar at the side of the main page and the site menu (And this was seriously the site in 2005...) The server team have never heard of keeping /spares/ around their racks so when something goes wrong, they don't have to overnight a part. Donations go missing, and suddenly someone running the site has a new toy. Countless people have asked neer to help fix the site, FOR FREE, and even if they do get in to help, someone ends up chasing them away, or none of their fixes will ever go live. Trouble Tickets are not being answered at all, even with the 20+ admins helping with them, they have tickets from March 2013. Pedophiles have gone unreported by admins themselves even when they are aware that they are. Admin's have gone abusing power, and even brought back to the admin team to do the same thing again. Admins have made sockpuppet accounts to call out critics of the site and cause trouble for other sites. Users who call out legitimate problems with the site have often been called haters by the site admins, and even at some points, entire groups of people have been banned from the forum for voicing their opinions on what is wrong with the site to try and hide it. On the forums, anyone voicing criticism or even posting suggestions will have their thread locked down and be told to "Find something more productive to do with your time than run around pretending to be informed about something that you are not. There are a lot of people who have left staff that well, lets just say there are two sides to every coin out there." (Yeah, find something more productive to do, clearly they're not changing anything, and when every. Single. FA. Ex-Admin has the exact same story to tell, do you think it's just luck the coin keeps landing on the same side?) Not to mention that time FA's registration system was down for nearly an entire year before anyone decided it needed to be fixed.
I've been here4 5 years and I've learned one thing; nothing has changed and nothing will change here.
Why should we waste it all
