Desolation of Smaug

My pocket summary of An Unexpected Journey was a batch of Vampire LARPers get together to play D&D, only now with much more drama and shouting and intense personal doubts.
Desolation of Smaug sees our heroic group of Vampire LARPers still doing a little bit of the drama, their DM is just ridiculously awesome with mapping and descriptions, and this time, they've been joined by two veteran powergamers, one of whom is kinda getting into the interpersonal connections and non-combat interaction, and the other who's just there to feat-tree and expert build his way through Middle Earth.

FA+

1) really loved the first movie
2) love The Hobbit so much that you really want to see this but not enough to be annoyed by most of the movie not being part of the book or
3) really just want to get out and see a movie.
Incidentally. I really wanted to see how it would play out, and I really wanted to see a movie, so I'm actually okay with having watched a matinee.
I found the first movie a bit dull and suspenseless - the best bits were the little character pieces - so I was going to give this one a pass, but I might go for your reason 3 if I can find a friend to go with. Oh, and for reason 4, which is to see the shiny pretty. I've heard the shiny pretty is good, and I want to see what they do with the Necromancer and Smaug.
That's why my contention these are LARPers trying something new. They don't know how to exploit the rules, they aren't building their characters to be the awesomest thing in Middle Earth, but boy howdy can they roleplay. In Unexpected Journey you couldn't go 20 minutes without someone getting into some big chunky angst about doubt or leadership or growing as characters or whatever. You couldn't go 15 minutes without someone falling off a cliff though. I'm really glad Peter Jackson has gotten to be better about that this time through.
A female friend of mine had me wondering if she was about to put on a "Team Smaug" shirt to start and bash "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" folks.
