AWESOME!!!!
*ahem*
Well, I saw the movie yesterday, and have thought it over. And I definitely recommend seeing this movie.
I saw it in 3D and HFR, and unlike the 1st movie, I didn't feel the two tricks added much to this one. If you want, you can see it in the tricked-out version, but I don't think you'd miss it if you saw the regular one.
Smaug was *Epic*! Effing HUGE!! Some have complained that Smaug acted a bit much like an idiot, but you need to keep in mind, Dragons in Tolkien's universe are more "brawny" than DnD dragons. They're arrogant, proud, and can't really do much in the way of magic. Benedict Cumberbatch works wonders as his voice.
Erebor was *beautiful*! Truly shows off that dwarves in the Tolkien saga think, plan and build *big*.
The barrel ride down the rapids was funny as hell, especially Bombur's parts in it.
Legolas has been called a scene-stealing attention-whore who has no place in this movie (or in the original book), and while he definitely kicks an unprecedented amount of orc ass, yeah, I could do without him.
The love-interest between Tauriel and Kili? Utterly superfluous and pretty overdone.
I've heard that some have felt that ending the movie before Smaug's death was a bit premature, but really, would you rather have him dead and then they spring the Battle of the Five Armies right at the end? Either way it'll be a cliffhanger.
Thranduil is a massive *prick* XD
Showing us the tomb of The Nine was *cool*. Maybe a bit nondescript, but I figure that's what you go for when you bury servants of utter evil.
And finally, the steward/stooge/buttmonkey of the Master of Lake Town reminds me so much of Grima Wormtongue I wanted to throw popcorn at the screen every time he was on.

FA+

And Smaug, only thing to say, FUCK YEA!
And the barrel ride, was one of the best Things in the movie if you as me.
I would have rather they end the movie when Smaug first appeared and looked down at Bilbo. Leave it on some suspense.
Dwarves say he is the king under the mountain!
I mean...for fuck's sake, they had Legolas standing on the *heads* of two dwarves while one-shoting four or five orcs in less then thirty seconds.
That's about as obvious a visual metaphor of his role in the movie as you'll get.
First they get captured by spiders, then they get captured by the elves, then an orc gets captured by the elves, then they get captured by the town guards, then Gandalf gets captured by Sauron... (why???????)
Moral of the story is just kill your prisoners before they escape.
