So last night at the NDK NYE ball (edit: a masquerade ball), I apparently terrified someone. I didn't do anything terrifying, I was just dancing on the dance floor very carefully, which probably looks pretty silly and pathetic, but it was crowded.
Some guy behind me taps me on the shoulder and shouts something over the music. I only pick up every third word, but I basically get the idea that he really likes my costume, "but...". So I ask/shout, "I'm not exactly sure what you're asking"
"Oh! I was going to ask if you could move to another part of the floor, but it doesn't matter, looks like we're moving instead". So they moved off. Mind you, I had been standing there dancing for 20 minutes. This guy just arrived, and he wanted ME to move. O_O;
It seems someone with him was terrified of my Rooth'ragon costume. Yes, that one. In that suit. With that look. TERRIFIED. So terrified, they couldn't look at me and had to run away.
After the countdown was over, and they released the balloons, everyone started stomping on them. It was like firecrackers indoors! Very cool. My friend Barry was with me, and he helped me spot some balloons on the ground, 'cause I had my stomping feet on and wanted to stomp one or two. I leaned over to get a good look to make sure I wasn't stomping on toes, and popped a couple of balloons. As I lifted my head back up, I turned to my left, and that guy from earlier was there, quickly escorting a girl out of the dance room. I suspect it was his girlfriend, but I'm not sure -- I think he wasn't old enough to have a daughter that tall, though to be fair, it was dark and I was wearing a mask. He might have had a small child with him and I just couldn't see her.
She. Was. Terrified.
I left the room soon thereafter, went up to the bar and took my head off. I looked around for the guy to make sure his girl was okay, but I didn't see him.
@_@;
Is Rooth really all that scary??

Don't let it get you down. It's more the costume itself vs what the costume is. Some people just don't care for them but there are plenty more who will love it.
Gives the big guy a hug" I'll make you a little gift pic to help cheer you up. ^,..,^
I'm ok with little kids being afraid of costumes. I'm even ok with certain people's Masklaphobia. Perfectly acceptable, and I had a bit of it myself as a kid. But there were other masked characters there, and even other fursuits, and I was the one she was terrified of.
I don't know if you had your LED eyes lit up? But if you did, that may scare some people, but that person being the only one, I dunno.
Guess, just being at the bad place at the bad period!
But your suit is sooooo amazing! I'm nearly jealous!

If it was just the eyes that were the problem, he could have asked me to turn them off instead of asking me to move.
Are you someone who could be called to have a great stature, like someone that would feel like intimidating, like those bar door guards?
But yeah I guess bad place, bad time!
I did get a lot of hugs last night. :)
Oh .. you know what else it might have been? The moving jaw. Just thought of that. @_@
Rooth isn't scary! D: And especially not when so well dressed and tame and kleen!
So yes ;) cheer up and know that it isn't personally about you <3
The range is endless.
Haha, it was either the fear of dragons of mascots. I know a few people who are scared of people in costumes, something about them being nervous about not seeing who is in it.
The only thing that makes the remotest sense after reading through all this and dwelling on it a bit is that she fears dragons specifically -- which, if that's all it is, is understandable, but still a "first". ^_^
PS - I just watched Machete last night. ;)
Dragons is the only thing that makes sense now it seems. XD I've never heard of a fear of it, but it doesn't seem weird that it exists.
(note: just realized it might've been the moving/talking jaw that freaked her out)
'under the influence' is entirely plausible. None of the other costumes freaked her out, but maybe something about mine did. Perhaps the glowing eyes, though they could have just asked me to turn them off instead of asking me to move, eh?
I'm glad you had fun though! :D
Y'know what, though .. it was an interesting glimpse into what sort of reactions a true anthro animal might encounter. I imagine minorities who have encountered prejudice have tasted of such irrational reactions as well.
Eeep.
I guess that's the part that gets me. Costumes are expected and encouraged at this annual event, so having a fear of particular costumes is a risk any phobic attendee takes, and so it should be their responsibility to manage that fear, not mine. It's like if I went to a rodeo, sat down next to some cowboy, and asked him to move to another seat because he's wearing a belt buckle with a cow skull on it that freaks me out.
All-on-all, if one is uneasy around such things and they attend an event where an encounter is likely, then what do you expect?
but yeah Rooth is fun, not scary. He's a good dragon.
