Chapter 1: Mayne
Hello strangers and friends, this is the story of my pup, Marcus. I have passed on, yet I still know everything about what happened. But first some background about me, my name is Mayne and I was the alpha of my pack, my mates name is Lucetta, and I had a strong family pack. We had many allies in other packs, and with other creatures in the area we live in. Now on to my tail. I was raising a pup from Lucetta's litter, he was the runt and was being shunned away, so I took him in and he grew strong under my care.
Several years passed, Marcus was still shunned from the other pups from that litter, but it did not matter to him, for he had made a strong connection with another pup from another pack. Her name was Jessie and they were almost inseparable, they did almost everything together and they even slept next to each other on cold nights. Lucetta did not like it but I assured her that it was fine and would not cause anything. Their bond only grew stronger with time, I could tell they were in love, so I asked Marcus if he was ready to help provide for her and eventually his pups, and he said he was I trusted that he would. Many months passed, Jessie was preparing a new den for Marcus and her and he was out hunting with some of the pack. Later that day when Marcus returned from hunting he asked Jessie if she wanted to take a hunting trip into the mountains just for the two of them, she agreed. Before they departed I gave them some advice, mostly just basic things, but there was one important detail, there were rumors going around of a rival pack roaming the area, that worried me greatly, so I made sure to warn them.
They returned two weeks later and I implored about their time together. Marcus was hesitant to answer and I could tell something happened, what eluded me. Jessie was excited though, I asked her why and she explained everything that happened, and that is when I learned they had become a mated couple. I was excited and scared to death at the same time, I asked Marcus if this was true and he just nodded. That disappointed me slightly, he should be happy for his new family, thus I asked why he wasn't happy about the news, he replied with that he was very happy but his fear of the responsibility overcame the happiness. I growled in anger, he backed away, I told him to push the fear aside and be glad. Jessie came over and nudged him and he smiled at her, she told him to come back to their den when he was ready, he was about leave but I stopped him and told him we needed to talk. He asked about what, so I began a little rant about pushing fear aside and taking up responsibility when necessary, after that he slunk back to his den.
Two months passed and Jessie was noticeably pregnant with a litter, Marcus's attitude towards his family improved greatly. Lucetta helped teach Jessie more about raising her pups, while I taught Marcus more about leadership. Winter was about to set in and I hoped that it would not be a harsh one for the sake of Jessie's pups, Marcus shared the same worry. Life went on as normal for another three months, winter was a mild one thankfully, we lost one of our eldest pack mates, we mourned her death greatly. Spring time rolled in, Jessie was about to have her pups and Marcus barely left her side, Lucetta helped with all the details of the pups birth and sometime later she left Marcus's den and announced some grave news. There were six pups in Jessie's litter, but only two survived, this tore Marcus apart, Jessie wouldn't let him enter the den, and the news did not only affect our pack but Jessie's pack as well, we all mourned the great loss. She got over it after some time, but Marcus never did, he didn't let it show though. We all did our best to help them,we let them rest for longer than everyone else, gave them a little more food, and I slightly forced them to associate with everyfur in the pack. Jessie eventually let Marcus back into their den, but with one rule, to stay away from the pups, which he followed it for a few months, then she let him sleep next to her again. The alpha from Jessie's pack came by to see how she was, he and I talked for awhile about the status of our packs, and we decided on merging both of us. Doing that helped us immensely, we gained more alliances, and more power. The pups grew stronger and associated well with the others in the pack, they asked for us to stop with the special attention though, we agreed to it hesitantly.
A few years passed and the pups were growing strong and I knew my time would come soon, I asked Marcus if he would take the role of alpha when I was gone, he said he needed to think. He came to me a few days later and said he would do it, I was overjoyed, he had a lot to learn about how the pack operates though, I included Jessie in those lessons, just in case if anything happened to Marcus. Besides my teachings Lucetta taught Marcus how to raise pups, all went well, I continued to grow weaker by the month. They feared I would not make it through winter. Time seemed to have went quickly over the next three months, Marcus and Jessie tried for another litter, they succeeded, elk and deer herds thrived, life went on as usual. Winter had finally come and it hit hard, we could barley leave our dens but we had some food stored and we made it through. I was walking with Marcus and Jessie in early spring and I suddenly felt a immense pain in my chest and I collapsed, Marcus ran for help and Jessie stayed with me. By the time Marcus returned it too late, I was gone, he knew what to do though.
