depression study, looking for anonymous volunteers
11 years ago
in my nursing community health unit we are doing a collection of research/projects on healhth topics of choice.. i decided to choose mental health and narrow it down to depression.
my big final project is to make a childrens book to convey and important message about depression in a way that children will be able to grasp, and that can be worked into a short story.
my question to the community is this...
were you affected as a child by depression in your family? were you educated at all around it? if you could have had some minor education (aka a childrens book) about the issues of depression, what message would have proved most valuable to you?
also,
if you are suffering from depression now, what is a message that you would like have conveyed to the upcoming generations, (has to have educational value about depression, what people with depression are going through) ?
you are welcome to post answers here if you don't mind not being anonymous, but if you would like to be anonymous you can email me at rachel_young_03 (AT) hotmail.com
i will be in no way sharing these stories with anyone.. they will be used to help me generate ideas on depression in our communities. i think this is an important topic, so i'm hoping someone here might be able to help me.

So, now that I've not helped at all, I'll just... Be over here.
My depression really started when I was in the 6th grade, and was diagnosed by the 7th. So I feel like one thing you could say in a book to kids is that just cause you're young, doesn't mean a child just is pouting or having a bad day, it can be something way more serious, (this doesn't apply strictly to depression they could be having other problems in their life, but it's still true.) Don't write a long term bad mood off as "he's just a kid, it can't be anything that bad. His brother probably took his cookie and now he's pouting."
And I never ever stand to see kids making fun of other kids because they are crying. They're obviously not having a good day, why are you making them feel worse?! I once had an encounter where some guys were picking on another boy because he was crying, and I heard one of them ask "Aww what happened, you big baby? Your fish die? Daddy took away your teddy bear?" Once I got the teachers to get the bullies to go away, I came over and sat down next to the crying boy, and asked if he wanted to tell me about what was making him upset. I'm betting everyone in my grade had seen me crying at least once and he knew I wouldn't make fun of him, so he told me. Turns out his Mom had just been diagnosed with cancer.
And I can tell you, as a kid, when you are told something like that about someone you love.... Well my mom had breast cancer right around this same time, and it is months upon months of hell. Every time you go to bed you hope that your mom will still be there when you wake up. It's absolutely terrifying.
And I just can't take the thought of people being mean to other people because they are showing a bit of a completely HUMAN weakness. So I guess what I'm going for is to say something like "Never be mean to someone who's crying, you don't know what's wrong, don't make it worse."
I hope what I've said helps a little at least, and if you have anymore questions about living with depression while still in school, feel free to note me :)
Your points make perfect sense. It shocks me too how youth can be nasty to those who are suffering. It makes no sense.. Ugh.
This is very helpful to me in my work. Your story was very touching, I'm sorry you had to go through with something as awful as cancer in the family. *Hugs*
But I'm so glad I can help! And again, I'd love to try and answer any questions you give me =^.^=
