You know you can always get a free Anti-Virus, like AVG XD

AVG is good, and so is Avast!

I've used them both, with pretty decent results.
also it is good to get Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware....
between the two of those and a good antivirus medicine, you should have very good protection against nasties.

^ This. I use the free version of AVG, and even my old laptop [the crusty, falling apart one i'm actually using right now] and my newer [but hopefully soon to be replaced] laptop have never once had a virus.

Even through frequent browsing of more... questionable internet content. *coughporncough*

Although, some of the programs Haystack has, I should look into.

between Avast (or AVG) and something like Spybot S&D and/or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (I recommend both),
most threats should be neutralized before they can cause issues.

I've been using some combination of those for the last 7-8 years and have never had a major virus or malware issue,
even though I -also- visit some pretty questionable sites from time to time.

antivirus (AVG, Avast, etc.) is only half the story.

DO get Spybot and/or Malwarebytes to supplement your AV software.

the free Spybot has both a excellent cleansing scan AND it comes with a pretty stout resident shield that can catch illicit activity before it causes serious harm.

the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, on the other hand, is totally about scanning/cleaning -- it's an extra layer of protection to get the few things Spybot might miss.
