Try using a data card with a external antenna. ping wont get much better but, but the transmission rate should be better.

Datacard? i've not heard that before, Do you mean dongle? A usb stick essentially.

If so then I did look into them but the mobile sim proved to be all round better value

Its a old term that stuck with me. What I meant is use a external antenna with you 3G stick. either a indor or outdoor one. most 3g sticks have a antenna connector, but sometimes the providers use custom casings that cover those sockets.

I use a vodafone 3G usb stick with a external antenna, Ihad to open up the caseing and dril la hole where the antenna connector is on the circuit board in order to be able to utilize it. In addition I use a cheap 6 € china made 3G wifi router that the 3G stick gets pluged into. So I can place the thing where I have the best reception- this is the part http://www.ebay.com/itm/14108340931.....84.m1497.l2649 it has a internal battery to and works on teh go with a notebook or non-3G equiped tablet. the antenna isnt listed on ebay anymore but it was around 25 € + some cable and a adapter for the 3G stick's connctor.


in my case it raise my downlink from 1.2 mbps to 21.5 mbps - the max 3G can do. from a flimsy one bar on the router config panel to a solid 5 out of 6.

I like the idea but I'd have to buy a dongle to stick in my mobile sim card. To be honest I'd probably just need a dongle to stick my mobile phone sim card into. I was planning to buy a new phone to use as a usb tether (this one is old and broken) but a dongle sounds more convenient.
Reason i didn't get one before was because I was led to believe I needed a dongle specific sim card.

Well if the stick is branded by say vodafone it might only accept vodafone simcards - its called sim lock also the dial in software usualy is branded to so it only accesses the stick with brand specific settings and therefore doesnt connect to other providers. but the one you linked is open because its the retail version that isnt bound to a specific provider -there would be a logo on ot, this one is also sold by T-Mobile but they didnt brand it so it will work regardles and it has a accessable antenna connector for the external antenna. And the price is ok too.

As for the china-make mobile 3G wifi router - it works with 90 % of all usb 3G modem sticks but not with smartphones, at least to my knowlage. the other think I forgot to mention is that you might have a limit on your data contract, not quantity wse but speed wise, some providers dont let you use the max speed of 21.1 Mbps and limit it to something like 7.2 Mbps in addition to the bandwith limit you get a data quato - if that is reached the kick you back to ca 1997 with the 64kbits GPRS (2G) speed, sometimes with a refill option that you can order via text message.
