It's never been overly strictly enforced but it's been around for a time:

6.3.3. Handheld Electronic Devices. Handheld electronic devices are small electronic
equipment such as cellular phones (personal or official), MP3 or similar players, radio, or
hands-free devices (e.g. Bluetooth). Handheld electronic devices will be plain black, silver,
dark blue, or gray. Holster and other storage devices used to carry handheld electronic
devices will be plain black, silver, dark blue, or gray. One handheld electronic device may
be attached to a belt/waistband on either side, clipped to a purse, or carried in the left hand.

Ok, I was last in the Air Force from Jan 2002 to July 2005, so how old is this AFI?

I pulled it from the 2011 edition I had handy but there is a similar paragraph going all the way back to at least the August 2006 publication. I can't speak before that, so it might not have been in place til then. I just know it's been on the books since I got in.

It's been that way since 06 at least.

*technically* phone cases are not mentioned in the afi as they're not electronic devices nor a storage device. at one point in time half a lot of our people had the real tree otter box cases, until a certain person decided to make up his own definitions for EVERYTHING. But he's gone now and everything runs smoothly again.
One thing I wish they would change is the backpack restrictions. I can't wear a black hikers backpack with green reflective trimmings all around, instead I have to use a black backpack with a reflective belt wrapped around it...

My commands have always harped phone color including casings...When they mentioned it at all, that is.

About damn time they eased the restrictions on running shoes. Sometimes it's kind of a pain finding shoes that aren't brightly colored or stupidly expensive.

The whole black athletic socks thing is going to drive my supervisor crazy, I know it. In addition to those neon-colored Free Runners and alike. xP
