CHAPTER 2: Marcus
Now you know my fathers story, may he rest in peace, now is the time for mine. The fact that Mayne knew it was his time comforts me greatly, Lucetta was so torn with grief that she ripped out some of her own fur, Jessie almost ran away, and I just planned what I would do as alpha. Mayne had trained me well so I was able to regain control quickly, the rest of the pack acknowledged me as alpha and were extremely loyal to me. After a few weeks Lucetta got better, Jessie and the other females helped her the best they could, meanwhile hunting continued, a litter a pups was born, all went well despite our major loss. We have a cave that's well sheltered were we lay our passed on to rest Mayne's brother, my brother and I carried Mayne's body to the cave and had a small ceremony for his memory, almost none of the pack slept well, so we all took turns sleeping and hunting.
About two months passed and it was summer, and a vixen by the name of Karry came to my den with a message, she said there was another pack becoming extremely powerful to the north of us. She was a good friend of Mayne's and we trusted her as an informant, besides her being a good friend we also gave her food when we could spare it and we let her sleep with us during the winter. The news made me think hard about our territory's size and if we could defend against an attack, to the north there is a massive range of mountains which would slow them greatly, but not forever. I thanked her I told her there was a fresh reindeer by Mayne's den if she wanted some, I also asked her if she wanted live with my pack and take up his den, she accepted and said she would help where she could. She was a big help with the pups and with some of our older pack mates.
A few weeks later Jessie and I were scouting out an almost unexplored area and we were ambushed by a rouge bear. It charged us and we easily avoided it, I leaped and latched onto its neck and clawed at it, Jessie attempted the same but was caught in the face by the one of the bears claws, she ignored the pain and continued attacking. After about an hour the bear lay dead, Jessie almost collapsed from shock so I half dragged her back to our den, Karry noticed us and alerted everyone and Lucetta made something with some plants and carefully applied it to Jessie's wound, her and I didn't do much but rest, letting our wounds heal, the pack did well during our break.
After a month or so we had a group of four wolves go out to scout the area Jessie and I were in and they had found a large community of bears, I decided to try and negotiate with them. I went out to that area , announced that I meant no harm, and carefully approached their cave. What appeared to be their leader stepped out revealing several large scars, this scared me actually. I told him that I meant no harm and wanted to talk, he questioned about what happened to the one that never returned. I responded that he was probably dead, he asked if it was by my paw, I said it was but only because he charged first. Their chief informed me that he was a roguish member and that we did him a favor. After several talks we became allies, they'd help us as long as we helped them, it didn't mater what the job was really.
Three years passed, many terrible and great thing occurred, Lucetta passed on during winter, Karry was injured badly, but Lucetta had passed on her knowledge of medicinal stuff down to Karry and Jessie. Besides that the bears were wiped out by an elite crew of my pack I assembled, the bears couldn't be trusted enough to live. Their pelts looked great in our dens. During that time Karry went missing, Jessie headed the search crew, they found her but with a down side. Her mate, Charles, had been slaughtered by what appears to be a large group of other foxes, why though bothered me for awhile. Jessie stayed with her and convinced her to come back, I took Charles remains and laid them in our burial cave which comforted Karry greatly. She thanked us for that and went back to doing her duties in the pack despite the events that just occurred.
About ten years passed and nothing more really happened, pack mates passed on, elk and deer herds grew and dwindled, despite all this time I still wonder if the pack to the north actually existed in the first place. Karry was evasive when I asked her about it, I just blew it off as nervousness or something, she was like that at times. I sent out small crews to investigate several times and they said they found nothing to support the claims of the ghost pack. As well as that Jessie and I were aging and growing weaker as the months passed, I had over twenty pups to choose from as well as a small selection of fox pups from Karry also for the role of alpha. This is going to be fun. It took me awhile but I decided on having two members of my pack as a pair of alphas. I chose my second eldest daughter, Jynnx, and her twin, Charles, whom I named after Karry's mate. Jessie and Karry agreed with my decision, so I began training them to run the pack. Charles was slow to learn everything but remembered it well while Jynnx was quick to learn and remembered everything. I trusted that they would take care of everyfur when I'm gone.
Another five years passed it was late summer and I knew my time had come, I called Jynnx and Charles to me and they came running. I told them it was my time and that they would have to work together to make the pack live on, then I told Jessie to come. She came in and layed down next me and rested her head on my shoulder, she said she would stay with me till the end, then Karry came dragging a leg of elk in, I thanked her and she left. Jessie and I ate then we decided to rest, I never woke up. The alphas had assured me they knew what to do, I had taught them well so they should be able to.
