There's gonna be some kind of paid membership thing going on, just so you know! Nobody knows the details of it yet but weasyl admins verified that some kind of subscription thing is gonna be happening. Ask the admin form details - he posted in this journal

Yeah, I knew about that. It's a sponsorship system. It's not the same as going pay-to-play.

How was FA paid for anyway? Did Dragoneer pay for this place out of pocket? Does anyone know?

I can't find anything mentioned in the forums in an obvious way, can you post a link to where you found this information?

Weasyl has no plans now or in the future that will require people to pay to access or view the site. We do plan to provide a premium subscription service for those who wish to support the site, and in return they will get some extra features such as increased file size limits. It's not our intent to make a Premium Subscription something that users will feel forced into buying to enjoy the site.

In short...you're going to charge people for "better" accounts. Just like DA, which everyone ran away from for similar reasons. Good go, you're still doing the same thing. *unenthusiastic applause*

The bonuses from being a premium member wont make the account significantly "better" than a normal account. We aren't going to make it so you're forced to buy premium to enjoy basic site features in any way. It's more of a thank you for supporting us, so you get a few extra perks. We don't plan on people feeling they need to buy premium, non-subscribing users will not have their accounts limited in obnoxious ways as an attempt to get people to purchase premium.

We will not remove usability for anyone when premium features are introduced. This is simply a way for us to ensure the site is consistently covered without resorting to emergency funds if something were to come up. We'd simply like to give something back to the users that help keep the site going.

I heard something and I just wanted to make sure you guys weren't kept in the dark about anything, so take it with a grain of salt but I didn't wanna keep anything that could be important from you :3
