What profound discoveries/realizations have you made?

You've all been reading about these discoveries and realizations that I ramble on about. So how about sharing things that you've learned that have completely changed your view of things.
I'll share my first and most profound realization, one that I've since learned is experienced by others in the world as well and is just as profound for them.
I realized that I exist. It's something we rarely think about, but it's one of the most profound realizations we can experience. It's also very simple to say and believe, but to actually fully comprehend your own existence in relation to the universe as a whole can be a life changing event and is the very definition of a "religious experience". This is the solid foundation upon which all my beliefs and realizations have been built, as I cannot in any way refute my own existence after acknowledging it.
So how about it? Perhaps through sharing a little bit like this we can all come to learn a bit more about ourselves.

Though I have no idea if those experiments were legit :P
The Universe does not care.
It is neither generous, nor malicious....
..it simply, 'IS'.

It can be warped.
Lack of a sence of Humor in a person can be a sorce of irritation when telling a joke.
And...
A person can have a sence of Humor, be fairly creative in telling jokes, and still not be very outgoing.
hard to remember sometimes:
Everyone is god.
even harder:
Everything is god.
perhaps the hardest to come to terms with:
Attachment is the root of all suffering.
the most difficult of problems always seems to have a simple solution.
2. People don't stop laughing when they grow old. They grow old because they stopped laughing.

Sometimes we think we're so smart and know pretty much everything about what motivates other people, but I think a lot of us try to insulate and shelter ourselves and our lifestyles from having to understand other people on a base level, choosing instead to rely on condescending generalizations before making any seriously qualified judgments on others. You don't know what it's really like to be someone who's rich if you're not rich, poor if you're not poor, an ethnic minority in a hostile neighborhood, a hometown conservative, a worker in an industrial town, or any of those things until you get right up in there and make observations without trying to attach them to your preconcieved notions to justify them.
Only after seeing things from certain groups of people with an open mind (and often times without realizing I was making these observations until years later in hindsight when they started to form/change how I judge certain groups of people), one that was truly open to change, did it give me a sense of sympathy and also frustration at how hard it is for other people to see things another way. And I mean truly to see things another way. Most people will pretend they're open-minded while feeling they're not going to change much no matter what they see or hear, because they aren't given much incentive to remove themselves from a situation where an insular world benefits them. It's only when that world comes crashing down in a life-changing way do most people see -- I feel it's an enormous benefit to see those things before they happen, because it gives people insight on why they should try and relate to their fellow human beings.
That being said, some people can't handle those kinds of fundamental shifts necessary to come to terms with a worldview that may seem scary or irrational to what they have known all their lives. I've seen people coast through life without a single hardship, and expect to get pampered even after they've left the home and the allowance stops coming in. A lot of those kids grow up and they're really bad with money (who would've thunk it?) because they squandered their opportunities and can't cope with the reality of the situation: that it's not easy to be rich from your merits (even through hard work), but it is quite easy to be poor from lack of them (and lack of a good working spirit, for that matter).
Some people think they're better than others, or they're smarter or worth more in value than other people. Some people feel like they're simpler than others, but don't need to know any more than they do. All of those people could be doing more to help provide something back to the world that provided for them, and I think a good start would be a learning spirit, and the resolve to be prepared to find out some really scary and different stuff out there about people and the world which effects a whole lot of people out there who aren't just you and me. The kind of stuff eventually does end up coming around full circle, no matter who you are or how insulated.
I see that often in people who are awake but are truly not aware.
the best way to deny this in yourself and empower the person arguing with you is to say: help me research this. or: gee. you know, i don't know anything about that. could you help me learn? this is the humanizing way. it is a way to learn true things. you can help people free themselves by easing their fears and prejudice.
and the power of knowing that you are no longer tied to the strings of fate, and control your own future.
but also you then know that your death is no longer held at bay, and it is up to you to live on and not die.
on another note, destiny sometimes comes back to ask a favor of the free, to untangle others who are lost, and send them on the right path.
my dreams are really weird,or the future. and both are useful in their own way.
But then I read of the Novikov self-consistency principle, which was essentially what I believed in before I knew it had a name, but never really considered the second part of it, which dealt with a little thing called 'destiny'. It really came into conflict with my notion that we are not destined to follow a certain path, but rather that the decisions we make set us down on a series of paths that result in our overall journey and final destination from where we started in life. It became an unacceptable contradiction in the way I personally perceived the universe. So, I brushed up a little more on time-travel theories and paradoxes, and it really opened my mind a little more to the possibility of multiple co-existing time-lines and realities as opposed to just one singular one that cannot be changed.
*shrugs* I suppose it really can't be considered a discovery since scientists and philosophers have been arguing the seemingly unending list of time travel theories and paradoxes for decades, but more of a personal train of thought that lead to a real change in how I perceived the universe around me. But now, just as then, I'm always open to more self-adjustments in the even I hit another snag in my own continuity. =3
we are here to simply have sex and live. 's about it.
another one is, if you think it, some one else has too.
so if you want to be original. do it first and claim it.
oh and that we like to make things more complicated.
simply for the hell of it.
Not that anyone else cares about such things. But I thought those were interesting at the time.
Oh, and some ethereal beings are much nicer than others.
I am too damn Naive.. because Friends can suck big time...
Dont trust the "Goodness" that is Inherent in people because people can be REALLY Rotten
"Everything and anything is possible, including the possibility that everything and anything is impossible."
Yeah, screw logic.
Everyone is racist. No matter how much you want to claim you aren't, you are. But that's not a /bad/ thing.
People separate other people according to several things. Age, weight, gender, race, take your pick. We see them as people of a certain "category". And we make assumptions. For instance, if someone is eighty years old, we can assume they need help lifting that box of heavy metal objects. However, if they're eighteen years old, we can assume they'll handle that box pretty well. If they're fat, they probably won't outrun you. If they're skinny, they probably won't eat as much.
We make these distinctions with race, as well. These distinctions are not necessarily bad ones; for instance, "He is mexican. I don't want to purchase a newspaper from him; I'll buy from the white guy next to him" is a bad distinction, and one that should be avoided. But most white people who look at Mexicans will assume, "Oh, he probably knows Spanish." and chances are, they're right. Depending on where they live, the people will also believe that they will know mostly Spanish--and again, are likely to be correct, depending. These distinctions are definitively /not/ bad ones, though they are not necessarily good; they are simply based on truth.
And white people are not the only people to experience these thoughts; everyone of every race makes distinctions about every other race within their mind, sometimes good and sometimes bad. And even when we believe we aren't racist for whatever reasons we make up, we can actually prove to ourselves--and sometimes everyone else around us--that the lines we draw between us and others still exist. Black people make white jokes, Asian jokes, French jokes, and Canadian jokes just like white people do; sometimes they even tell the same jokes. And the jokes themselves are inherently funny, because they are based upon truth; indeed, every punchline has a sucker of some sort.
The trick is to /relax/ about it. Though many people will use the term "racist" as something as scathing as "pedophile" or "person who talks in movie theaters" as a brand to lay upon others when such situations arise, it's really only a word of hypocrisy. You just need to relax and move on, and I assure you; whatever issue came up will be found as much less important than the other party makes it out to be.
Well, unless you're using "the N word" and saying that black people are lazy and tend to rob stores for a living. Then you kinda deserve to get smacked, but that's different entirely.
The stance of "the N word" in the future is up for debate, but that's a different topic for a different time. :D
The second would be when I truly realized and understood that different people have different values. Good and bad are different depending on your perspective, and the individual making the judgement. As a result two people can disagree and both be correct within the confines of their own perception. Also, unfortunately, the world will never be in complete agreement about what is right and what is wrong, so we'll never be able to achieve a world where everyone is happy and satisfied.

Can you not choose your words in a conversation?
Wouldn't the chosen words spin it towards one outcome, desirable or not, over others?
Can not people choose what they want to do in their life, devote themselves entirely to their profession, and become the best in it?
Sure, there's plenty of unforeseen consequence in any action, which shapes each other person's choice like an enormous series of ripples in a pond. But there's always a choice.
I would argue that you can no more choose your words than a ball can choose its bounce. The way a ball bounces is determined by the environment that it's moving in, its velocity, and its internal structure. The way you respond is determined by the situation you are in and your mental state. Your mental state, in turn, was defined by your past situations.
Facts, unless proven otherwise:
1. Your brain is what allows your body to perform actions (lazy man's evidence: remove the brain, watch the actions stop).
2. Your brain is made up of atoms and other such physical particles (lazy man's evidence: everything is).
3. Physical particles behave regularly, with the exception of quantum stuff (lazy man's evidence: they've been pretty regular so far).
Conclusion:
Your actions are dictated by a mass of particles which behave in a regular manner. Unless you claim that somehow "you" can sway probabilities and nudge particles one way or another on the quantum level, there's really no way you can plausibly claim that you are in more control of your actions than a rubber ball bouncing through a room.
The concept was that God might not be the creator of the Universe, but the first entity, the first Angel. It was a tremendous shock to my consciousness, because it was so incredibly simple yet true. If God were indeed the First and not the Creator, who would really be able to say otherwise? He could simply claim to be the Creator and no one would be able to truthfully contest that since there would be no one before him to say otherwise. (I'm using 'him' here since the God of the novel was male)
Needless to say, the book was a big contributor to my rising into heathenistic view and freedom from the suffocating omnipresence of the 'All Mighty God' belief. Reading is Power!
Secondly, that for me. True altuism (sp) does not exist and that there is no meaning in this life except that which we make for ourselves. It is only when we have given up on life do we see no meaning.
I stay happier that way.
The glass is half full, but it might be flat.
God = Everything
therefore
Everything = Love

Also, CheezIts + Mayo = pretty good.
Descartes replies, "I think not." And then he disappears.
I believe I've passed the age
of consciousness and righteous rage,
I've found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless points of view
And life went on, no matter who was wrong or right.
people have die trying to change beliefs
when was the last time someone died modifying and idea?

when was the last time you heard of a drunk driver killing someone?
recently i bet now,
when was the last time you heard of a stoned driver killing someone think about it ^^
that many times we think life is unfair... and many times we'd like to get rid of all of our problems... but we simply can't because that's what gives us a reason to keep going. Life is unfair? no, it's not... things always happen with a good reason, even if we can't see it. I've seen many things happening around me... and I'm sure that I wouldn't have realized their value if not seeing problems happening around my life.
all in all, everything happens for a reason, it might take too long for us to realize, but all we have to do is go back and see where it changed the track in our life
'Twas the Bubble Theory.
The possibility that one person always gains, through chance or otherwise, the ability to change everything, but the motivation to change nothing.
What is chaos? My definition: anything and everthing happening all at once.
Now, in a universe of chaos, wouldn't it be possible for a pocket of "order" to happen even if momentarily?
What is the nature of "order"?... Keep everything in order? To keep itself as it is?... "To keep itself as it is" would prolong the life of this pocket of order?... Would this be a form of self-awareness? If so, would "order" itself be an entity?
Would this pocket of order be our universe? Our existance? Is existance an entity?
1D = length (width and height are always 0; zero)
2D = length x width (height is always 0; zero)
3D = length x width x height (never moving, but always occupying the same co-ordinance in space)
3D cannot exist in 2D cannot exist in 1D
4D(motion)? = length x width x height x distance moved from starting co-ordinance to stopping/ finishing co-ordinance
5D(time or space)? = passing of... ? time? (the "time" it takes a 3D object [length x width x height] to occupy all the points between the start and finish co-ordinance?) Can a 3D object move fast enough to occupy all those points between the given start and finish co-ordincance, all at the same... "time"? If yes, then it would take the 3D object to go from start to finish co-ordinances in no (zero) time at all... What is time?
Is time a human made concept thats broken down into years (one revolution of Earth around the sun) = approximately 365 days; one day(one rotation of the Earth) = approximately 24 hours; one hour = 60 minutes; one minute = 60 seconds
Is time a measurement?... of motion (moving 3d object) broken down into units of "seconds" or is time a dimension itself?
If you are tired of all this drivel, sorry to waste your... "time" XP
A less abstract realization:
Don't cheat. Because in the end, you'll find you've only cheated yourself.
All good things take time: fruit from a tree ("fruits" of your labour?), harvesting a crop, purifying gold, an oisture/ clam producing a pearl, and especially wisdom ("pearl" of wisdom?)
