Obligatory nonsequitur gaming geekery:
I'm playing Oblivion. My character is an archer assassin, specializing in stealth and alchemy. (Lots of poisonous flora to mix up in Cyrodiil...)
Anyhow, I'm clearing a dungeon, and I realize that I am treating my Icebolt Bow like a SWAT M-15, slicing angles and all proper SWAT tactics for stealth.
What taught me these skills? Games that aim for ultra-realism in tactics, from the very first Sierra Police Quest SWAT through the Rainbow Six series.

Oh. Redguard. Hee.
You have balls. I took an easy route; Argonian spellcaster. I enjoy being able to employ a simple spell to accomplish the most meager task. And the water breathing is sooooo cheating.
But f*ckin' hell, Restoration is SO HARRRD to INCREASE. GRAGH.
Once I got access to the spell creation altars in the Academy, I made two token spells. One to cast fire damage for five points on myself, and heal me for four points, and one for vice versa. They only cost a few points apiece to cast, and they have a net effect of harming or healing me for a whole one health point.
Then I hotlinked 'em to keys 4 and 5, and wander around casting them in succession. That'll bump your Destruction and Restoration much faster than any other method I've found.
But hey, it's worth it in the end. I can even make myself a master Alchemist like you with a simple spell. If only for 10 seconds. xD
