I know win 7 too well (Or did) to drop it in favor of technical nightmare I saw of Ubuntu.
And I dunno I never listened to it. xD
Far more stable, much faster, more customizable. And Ubuntu is one of the worst distros out there xD

Linux always uses available system resources, Windows doesn't. Linux can handle ext4 (best filesystem currently in existence), Windows can't. Linux uses NSA security, so it's nearly impossible to get a virus on it. And you've used Windows :P
And I know it fairly well x3
And it's fast, so why not try? It's also often used together with Windows (so do I, I sometimes need Windows software for school, even though there are alternatives).
I will try it if that laptop is a cheap repair. :u Our tecky may use bondo to but it in place again. xD
It's not the easiest to use, and requires terminal use for maintenance. Others do not XD
I use Manjaro (which is based on Arch), and it does as well, but I'm used to it x3
I've done that a few times, it takes a lot longer than with Iinstaller (Manjaro has a net version, which is its minimalist version, and quite close to a basic Arch install, but it has an installer, which takes like 5 minutes to install everything xD)
Though you still need a desktop environment then, but for instance Xfce is like 200-300 MB, and if you want a display manager (for having a user interface for logging in), that's 50 MB or something xD
Or Mint, which might just be easier.
