Beeker is dying (my rat not my sona)
I understand when a rescue rat falls ill, its a rescue you know that there are health issues at hand. but when a rat you have paid for suddenly starts dying..what then. I havent slept yet Beeker my plat hooded male is dying, open mouth gasping, skinny as all hell no fat just bones but looked fluffy which fooled to think he was ok. I never get to pet him or hold him since I bought him from a breeder along with a blue hooded male named Templton they are a year now. so Beeker let me pet him...I thought it was strange really but I was greatful, sometimes I can get away with petting him it depends but he nips or bites. so I leave to fill water bottles again and more food come back hes stretched out holding the bars head up back arched mouth wide open and heaving for air..I litterally have NO emotion right now because I've lost so many friends ( my pets are friends shh) I just deal with it then I mourn later -.-...hes my namesake so I'm sure I'm gonna be balling later. I'd take him to he vet but last time I did that for Moxxi (RIP) she died a week later and I was 300 in the hole. I think hes too far gone honestly to bounce back so I'm just making him as comfy as I can and loving him up until he decides to..let go. his boys are cuddling him and grooming him, I guess I know hes the daddy cause we never knew, they wont leave him alone..poor babes. Templeton is probably next hes pretty aloof too but had shown progress let me pet him and he took my fingers I thought he'd bite but he just laid his head in my open hand..I just stared couldn't believe it, such a sweety.
so now I look at my naked boys they are pretty much rescues I got em for free. I love em to bits so polite and loving and kissy. they scrap alot so someones always got a scab haa, they seem fine which is good and easier to tell if they are ill no fur. but the babes I got too one has a sneeze now and then but the other has about 10 to 15 little hiccup sneezes in one line...it worries me. shes young I can get her medicated sure thing, Sebby my big male his lungs are scarred hes always making noise regardless of meds or not and hes FAT x-x and livly and active along with his bro Max so I'm not toooo worried but still thier dad...yea
Spooki my eldest female and last in the trio of girls I did have Rhaps and Moxxi are gone...has tumors that are getting bigger and bigger and looks like one is bugging with her genitals shes always got a messy fuufuu (...vag ok -.- >>) like the bulge is preventing her from squatting right or something. shes loosing some weight too but never hesitates to cuddle me or anything she wants babies so bad but she cant x-x keeps trying to go for the new ones. but atleast she gets to see her grand babies, shes the mom of Max and Sebby.
this post is really long, sorry and those of you who read it thanks. my mom is blaming herself that she heard this breathing and thought it was sebby so never told me she thought i knew and in truth yesi knew about sebbi but beeker no, but shes taking it on as her fault but its not. we knew these boys had something wrogn one week into having them..they sway alot, bite all the time, tense when you even try to pet them like they totally freeze.. but I didnt care I figure they needed and deserved love I wasnt gonna give up on em. and here we are..one or both are dying at just over a year old...-sigh-

FA+

Has it been eating or drinking? Going to the bathroom?
Although i haven't worked with rats i have worked with mostly birds and a few squirrels before for about a year.
Amoxicillin is purchased at fish/aquarium stored. I'll send you the link of I can find the exact store I got mine from. I've had to use it twice. Once when my girl peanut butter was having the same issues as Beeker and another time with my boy Jorah.
Buy this stuff as soon as you can and you could save his life.
He is definitely still too young to die
If by swaying you mean that they are swaying their head back and forth than that is normal and they do this to judge depth and see better. Biting is not normal but it's not really a sign of illness. That can be fixed easily the more time you spend with them outside of the cage. There is a thing called immersion that will turn a biting rat to a snuggly pile of floof in a day. Sometimes it takes a bit longer but it works. And rats with fur are easy to tell when they are sick. When their fur gets really puffy it means there is something very wrong and sometimes it's the first sign you get. You should always check your rats breathing daily. Hold their chest up to your ear and listen. A healthy rat will have a wooshing sound and one with a respiratory infection will have a rattle.
It sounds like Beeker just has a respiratory infection which is NOT something he should be dying over. It's such a cheap and easy fix. He deserves to live.
I'm not going to judge or assume things but all these health issues doesn't seem right. I will gladly help with anything I can to help keep your babies happy and healthy.
I'm no rat expert but I do tons of research and I am in a rat forum so I learn a lot of stuff everyday.
again the health issues with Beeker and the naked babes have nothing to do with how I take care of em, everyone is handled everyday and they eat a variety of rat specific seed mixes with lab blocks and one hamster gerbil food they love called bonanza and some puppy food, Holistic Actrium. and for treats they get yogurt drops, veggies all teh time, chicken and pork bones, and semi sweet and dark chocolate chips or little pieces. blueberries and powerade when needed. I'm rather baffled realy since ppl in my town usually come to me for rat help x-x and now I'm just liek well shit i havent seen this before, with Beeker I mean and al I did was worry all lastnight x-x
http://www.aquaticpharmacy.com/ you will find amoxicillin in capsule form on this site. You can buy it for ten bucks. And it will more than likely save Beeker's life. And then you can store the rest for emergencies. They truly are a lifesaver, you have no idea. They fight already every infection a rat could possibly have.
You can also pick up a needleless syringe they is 1 ml for measuring and administering medicine. You'll also need a yummy liquid to mix the capsules in.
You might be able to find amoxi in a fish store if you have one near you.
Basically you break one capsule and pour the powder into 7.5 ml of your liquid and then you give .4 ml to him first dose and .2 ml every dose after that. You give him a dose every 12 hours for three weeks. No less no matter how much he improves. And you refrigerate the leftovers and you have to make a new batch every five days because it starts to lose potency.
These are basic guidelines right now. If you can weigh him we can work out more precise measurements
can i mix it in a syrup? the vet gave me baytril in strawberry syrup when Rhap had an infected bite
That is how my little Toast ended up with a head tilt. When I got her she had a URI and developed an ear infection which almost killed her.
I think you can mix it in syrup, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to as long as it is something he loves.
Gosh I hate when people who don't know anything about rats tries to give people rat advice. I'm so sorry for your losses.
