awesome. :) i could sure use the work. i haven't had a lot of people wanting to commission because i just raised my prices. when i was charging $600 for a head i had a lot of people wanting to commission. I do very well on premade items though. the suit i sold was paid in full but got a ton of interest

So much this, I've been having the same problem quite a bit this past year with children. Its always the "i only have $100, and i really want X can i pretty please have it." Ive had to say i don't know how many times that $100 partially covers just the supplies needed to even make the thing they are wanting. :|

I know I'll get flack for saying this, but I don't think people should be in the furry fandom if they're under 18.
Fandoms that are full of kids (like Sonic) tend to be full of crazy idiots (not saying the furry fandom isn't).
Not to mention all the porn in this fandom. Admit it, this fandom is approximately 90% about porn and sex.

Casual sex in general.

Basically, despite being such nerds that otaku, bronies, gamers, and other nerds would shove us into lockers and give us swirlies if they could do so behind a computer screen, we party and fuck like the popular kids. Because of this fandom, I went from having no sex to having casual sex on a regular basis, from barely drinking and smoking weed to doing it more or less on a regular basis.

In other words, not something to expose kids to.

Not to mention that kids are still growing and will probably grow out of their fursuits within a year or two.

I think that more cons should be 21+ or at least 18+. Or in the very least, have distinct areas for under 18s and 18+ (and I guess 21+ for American furcons with alcohol).

I'm in Canada so drinking age here is 19, I'm personally really uncomfortable drinking around under age people. I am super strict about IDing people before they can even come in my room at a con or even a party at my own house. Theres a con/camp here in Ontario called camp feral, that is strictly 19+ and its probably the one place I actually feel comfortable drinking, its just so awkward around minors, especially ones who like to lie about their age. I have no issue with some younger people in the furry fandom, my problem is with the ones who get drunk knowing that it can get the rest of us in shit at cons. and with the ones who act like immature little shits. and there are alot of them sadly. I wish there were more 19+ cons and such here in ontario, or areas at cons where people 19+ could go and hang out and not have to worry about underage people being around.

I'm also concerned about the fandom becoming mainstream, as it will inevitably become politically and corporately correct, inoffensive, milquetoast, sanitized, castrated/neutered, and generally much lower quality in an attempt to make the fandom appeal to the widest possible audience and not offend any special interests, big corporate sponsors, etc.

It happened to punk, rap, animation, and gaming, and it could happen to us too.

The furry fandom is not only geek culture but counterculture. Unlike other geek cultures, the furry fandom is pretty much completely avant-garde, as it was built entirely by "the people" as in without any corporate influence whatsoever. Pretty much all of our content is original with the exception of fan art, rule 34, etc. not based on any preexisting franchise made by a multinational media mogul. This, I think, has sort of allowed the furry fandom to retain its underground status for so long, unlike the brony fandom, which became mainstream and corporate after only a couple of years.
(Keep in mind, that the brony fandom had only been around for a couple of years at most before Andrew WK endorsed it, while the furry fandom had been around for decades before we got his blessing.)

I'm just kind of concerned about kids joining the fandom because something becoming family friendly is one of the signs of something becoming corporate, bland, uncreative, and inoffensive.

the fandom should accept every age and try not to make it so adult oriented. but you cant change things sometimes. the best we can do is hide most of it till they are older. When i have kids they are going to be exposed to the furry life i will try to make sure they don't ever see the sexual part of the fandom. eventually they will see what some people do in the fandom.

I have found that this does not include the entire fandom. I do agree that there is that side of it, but it is the same with every fandom out there. Younger people have already been exposed to things like that if they have any internet connection or have been in the public school system. It is very unfortunate that some kids can't control themselves and because of that they get generalized, but there are younger people who do act responsibly and maintain self control (better than some of the adults on here). I bet you have already guessed that I am younger, I am 15 actually, but I find it important to make it known that we aren't all immature little brats lol. This fandom has actually done a lot for me already. For example, I am running my own suit building business now and am learning about what owning a business entails. I'm not trying to give you flack, I just wanted to point that out.

I know that there are plenty of kids who are alright just like there are plenty of adults who are totally not alright.
Though I don't know what will happen when the fandom becomes mainstream.
Now we seem to have Social Justice Warrior furries on Tumblr who spread racism and sexism throughout the fandom, the only difference being that it's directed toward whites and men, along with cispeople.
I guess some people need to feel persecuted now that you probably won't be harassed for being a furry anymore.

I kind of regret the fandom leaving the underground. Now that the fandom is becoming mainstream, we'll have to tone it down for all the normies, radical sex-negative feminists (of course noting that plenty of self-identified feminists are not like that), and yes, children.
There is always a concern when a subculture becomes mainstream. When punk became mainstream, much of its anti-authoritarian, libertine, and anti-establishment aesthetics were toned down to make them palpable for a mainstream audience, taking punk out of the dirty basement, graffiti covered club, and non-government-authorized squat, and instead took it to the big corporate arena and Walmart.

I predict that the fandom will split like the punk subculture did. There will be a big mainstream corporate element comprising the vast majority of the fandom, mainly normies who have only a passing interest in the fandom, get offended by non-vanilla sex, and obsessed with being politically and corporately correct, creating a bunch of inoffensive milquetoast tripe for the masses, with big corporate cons that are all ages, possibly pornography and alcohol free, and without anything that would offend the multinational corporations that could be funding these cons, and there will be a small but devoted underground following of furs uninterested in all of that "correct" stuff, focusing on artistic liberty and therefore creating content deliberately designed to not be accepted in the mainstream, with "room parties" aplenty, not only alcohol but possibly drugs as well, and generally being totally unsuitable for children, squares, politically correct types, etc. It might end up creating more politically charged content as well, promoting liberation of women, men, and trans*people, sexual liberation, and anything else to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable," as the activist Mother Mary Jones said.

I think we are far from becoming mainstream at the moment, but we are relatively more known because of certain shows and things of that sort. I went to a halloween party and out of over 200 people, only 2 knew that I was a furry. I am afraid that you are right though, when we do become more mainstream what you said is bound to happen.

I wonder if the Tumblr Social Justice furs will end up making their own splinter fandom after being shunned once and for all by pretty much anyone with half a brain who realizes that being historically oppressed is not an excuse to then oppress others once you've found an environment to do so, when this splinter fandom shuns any and all potential allies by acknowledging that they're not out to educate but instead to "vent" (read: bully) those who are different from them.

All of my future commissions are going to be only 18+ because I just can't deal with the little kids.

I actually had one contact me and ask me for a full suit and asked me if I could run their parents credit card in small amounts over the next few months. And another who wanted me to build their suit, ship it to them and THEN pay me over the next few months thru their allowance. I get that kids want to suit, but it's just not a good idea to invest in something you can't wear for long.

This is an annoying issue, (especially pertaining to comments on youtube and such, since those are ridiculously abundant on basically any video involving a suit) but not all "younger people" per say are immature and obnoxious like that. I, personally, am 15, make fursuits, have sold them, etc. perfectly fine. I also am commissioning a suit, which I have my own money for, and have paid everything on time, I have also stopped growing, been stuck at 5'6 for the past 3 years. I just don't find people saying things like "Oh, you're not 18+? Well you're obviously an immature little fuck and I shall have no contact with you whatsoever!" it's just kinda rude. I actually wanted to commission you within the next year or so for something, because I really do like your work, but according to this you won't work with me, because I don't have my mummy order things on the internet for me? These types of things just urk me and my apologies if I come off as rude, but I see this so much and I felt like giving my input. This isn't just some angry rant directed at you, and only what you said in this journal, it's regarding everyone who says stuff like this.

when i was your age I ordered from  sharpe19 she knew who i was i met her and always talked to her in streams. I guess if the person who shows maturity and can make payments i would let commission but there is legal issues that also come with it a lot of people waited till i was 18 to ask about commissions. if you dont pay legally I cant do anything because you are under age and cant sign contracts. its and issue I had to address. iI started selling my suits at 15 and ever since then ive been building and selling. im now 18 and still doing it.

Yeah, see, I understand the legal issues, but you didn't ever mention that in your journal, you just said about how immature people under the age of 16 apparently are. The fact that 17- cannot legally sign, and be held to a contract could obviously be an issue, maybe that's also something you could mention as to why you'd rather not work with someone underage.
