Try restarting the app, and hopefully it recovers the file. It's happened before with a few college research papers. Whether it does the same with digital illustrators, I'm not sure.

When (and if?) you do restart a picture - SAVE OFTEN!!! I know that feeling of losing numerous hours of progress in the blink of an eye or the press of a power button. Its the same as losing your child in a busy crowd or getting stuck in a full elevator - followed by that brief twinge of panic and heartache that occurs. Ouch...X(
