FEC Motive Power Update
All six nearly new SD70M-2s are going off the roster. Additionally, FEC 2000, the first heritage-painted unit, a GP40, is being returned to EMD.

I really hope karma kicks in on them for doing this. CN got a good taste of it after scrapping all of the WC SD45's, IC SD40's, and other things. They had to replace them later with SD60's and (in my opinion) inferior secondhand GE Dash-8's. Instead of keeping what worked (and had a lot of common parts between them), they threw away perfectly fine locomotives, and replaced them with junk nobody else wanted. There's a reason UP and BNSF were so keen on selling them. I don't want FEC to go away, but it would be hilarious to see them abandon the C4's for the old trusty EMD's.

The saddest part is that FEC is not directly at fault here. Fortress Investment Group, a company with little to no firsthand knowledge and experience with how a well-run railroad works, is making the choices. I'm sure the crews aren't happy to be giving up the diesels they know and love!!

That's the problem with a lot of companies nowadays. Profit comes first, and anything else is an afterthought. Did they have any clue on how much training (ha ha pun) it'll take for crews and mechanics to learn the ins and outs of the new GE's, along with the logistics of having twice as many parts (GE and older EMD) laying around? As a side note, if Fortress isn't experienced with running a railroad, then those people in Quebec ain't seen nothin' yet. If Ed Burkhardt couldn't take MM&A and make it work, then it's probably a lost cause.

Ironically, I'm sure some of the displaced power will end up replacing the old GE Us and Dash 7s on the MM&A. FEC is slated to lose most of its older EMD fleet as well, retaining only a handful for local and switching duties.

The ACe's / M-2's are actually pretty horrible to work in, especially the earlier models (older ones can't lead on BNSF because of nonexistant soundproofing). It makes sense to only use 1 manufacturer or 1 horsepower range on a railroad, easier maintanence (common parts) and easier to assign power to trains since horsepower is all the same.

The fact remains that this is a 100% switchout. Does not make any sense from a money standpoint, at all. Replace every diesel, retrain every crew member, restock your entire parts catalog...the list goes on. For all we know, the FEC crews may end up hating the GEVOs more! Who can say?

Well, crap. Let's hope they change their mind soon..

They won't. It's a done deal...

Well, shame.. nobody ever thinks of heritage, its always improvement, isn't it?

The industry needs to take some pages from NS!!!
