What you can do

So last wensday we were talking a bit about fun stuff to do in Austin as a community and throwing around some fun ideas. (More on those later) KaGe pointed out that a lot of people he knows aren't really comfortable with fandom/sub community get-togethers, and I definitely agree...there are a lot of people who meet their social needs elsewhere, have insecurities that they haven't gotten past, simply aren't that social, etc etc etc. The number of people who are up for any given activity are a slice of a slice of a minority.
This is not necessarily a BAD thing. I think a frequent illustration is when an SO gets dragged along and doesn't want to be there. (I have been both the dragger and the draggee in the past) It's generally a trial for everyone in the vicinity and it seems to rarely get better over time.
(another variation is the person who shows up long enough to find a boyfriend/girlfriend and then bails immediately after, only to be seen again when they break up. Kudos for recognising the value of a community, at least!)
Anyways, inclusive dorks like myself frequently want to include everyone, but that's not a realistic goal. Including people who WANT to be included is. (And have the maturity to not piss in the punch bowl, of course)
This translates to 'mention stuff to people you think might be interested, but don't push' for me at this point in time.
Anyways, one of this really obvious thing that people like me are really slow figuring out. Yay for incremental progress. *wag*
just

Honestly I would try doing something like a weekend picnic potluck. Austin (from what I saw) has soooo many parks that would be just awesome for it and they are great meets for just taking it easy and letting people socialize. The only organization that is really needed is picking a park, date, and time, having people bring food (or money to pay for food), and having a few core organizers bring some hot dogs and/or burgers as a main course to grill out. At our meets we will have people romping around in fursuit (I'm usually one of them :P), some folks will have an art jam, others will be playing card or board games, many just stand around and socialize, and there's even some more active things going on (such as tossing a frisbee or football around). They are great fun, especially when kids wander over with their parents to get fursuit hugs and pictures. Definitely worth a shot if you think enough people would go for it! And, really, who can argue with food? :P
Yeah, we need to use the hell out of the outdoors before Texas' eight months of summer hits and we all retreat into the A/C!
I certainly wouldn't discourage nearby non-students (like yourself) from showing up, but I'm not aiming at anything large-scale or broadly accessible. Leave that to more responsible people. :P
Possibly it'll just be me sitting around chewing on things, but I do have books to read. ^_^
If you could point to various UT students I could pester on FA, I'd much appreciate it.
