Hehe, that's pretty much what he is now, making a hybrid would just solidify it and give people a point of reference when thinking about him

I had a similar deal regarding my own species years ago. Though it isn't outright mentioned most of the time, my own character is technically a hybrid of sorts since I adored my original wolverine sona so much. That's why I kept the teeth/claws, dark brown arms/legs, remains of dark brown on the face and white chest fluff (that like every artist ever always forgets. =P) One of these years I might re-upload all my old Wolverine art. ^^

I'll second the wolverine with tanuki tendencies, but the idea of a Wolvenuki is kinda nifty I'll admit. =P

I'd say keep him as a Wolverine and from time to time hit up an elixir to turn you into a Tanuki.

well not neccessarly tanuki... shoot lookit me... but maybe heavily tanuki-influenced... jus' make yerself a hyper shapeshifter an it'll explain everything ;)
