should i attempt some free art??

i am trying to teach myself to draw better, using how to draws, i plan to start drawing cute animals. if i did free art, i will need a reference sheet, and the understanding that f theres a lot of detail, or more limbs then the usual 2/4 then it wont be exactly right. but if its close that can work! ^_^
