Computer Issues...
Lost most of the weekend due to computer issues. I built this system back in spring of 2011 and it has been pretty much rock solid till about a month ago when I started getting random blue screens. Narrowed the problem down to the video card and figured I would just drop by memory express (great computer chain, I remember when they were just a small hole in the wall in Calgary years ago). Went there today and picked up a snazzy Asus GTX780, 512GB SSD, new mouse and a foot rest :) drove back and installed new video card aaaand nothing. black screen on boot, problem wasn't with the video card, problem is with the PCIe port on the motherboard! (Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 if you wanna know) so I tried my old HD7970 in the other PCIe port and so far so good! Grudgingly have to return the GTX780, I would rather the $$ in my account rather than a few extra FPS -.-
Not looking forward to when the other PCIe port dies and I have to replace the mobo, that's a PITA :p

How does a bus just die on you? Odd. Maybe id see it if pcie pushes a power line and it died, like a cap leaked or blew up...

OP
It failed over the last month or so, getting progressively worse till I could only go about 5 min between blue screens. I think it is related to the power supply of the PCIe slot, it had no issue running a less power hungry spare that I had, and it would not even boot running the beefier GTX780. But after visual inspection, no leaky caps. My system power supply is a 1200W Corsair, and the only effected part seems to be the PCI slot for some reason. Visually everything looks good but if I try the video card in the top PCIe slot, blue screens result. May have to look into a new mobo soon :(

Yeah, thats a bother. Strange that a PCIe slot would die. I'm still running my desktop that I built in 2008. (Mannnn 6 years) I leave it on for most of the year too... It can play games like Portal 2 and Dead Space 2, but it lags on Mass Effect 3. But plays 2 though. lol. So maybe an upgrade is in store for me soooon.
