Wow...that is just unacceptable behavior for ANY artist. I mean, yeah, sometimes it is annoying when a commissioner backs out at the last minute, but if no money had c hanged hands...the person shouldn't have reacted like that. I'd like to know who this artist was because that's definitely not someone I would want to work with either!

well worst part is it wasn't even gonna be paid and started on till the 1st. So it really wasn't last minute.

At this point, it's pointless to report them. The best you can do is answer any honest inquiries, as it will help people avoid situations with the individual.

Had the art even been started? Ive had people come to me telling me stuff like this and im pretty damn chill with it. Ive been there, shit I was hospitalized and half dead and couldn't work on commissions even.

I have no idea why the artist would respond that way. No one who wishes to do business in the future treats people like that.
I am an artist too, and I would never dream of writing anything of that nature.
I could not even excuse that behavior if the piece had been started. I would just respond that I would keep the piece and hope that we could continue our transaction after you were in a better situation, health-wise.

Well that was extremely un-called for like many others have said. I've had someone back out of an unpaid commission before because they needed the money for personal reasons and I definitely didn't react that way. That's just disgusting. You were very respectful and polite so you definitely did not deserve that.

The only reason I could see an artist being upset in this circumstance is that a lot of people seem to make up stories as an excuse/try to get an emotional response in return.I don't agree with their response at all but maybe with you telling them in detail as to why you need to cancel, they thought it was BS. In any event, it is their loss and you don't want to do business with someone who is so quick to be a tool.

Ok, I'm NOT condoning the behavior at all. I do not think that was an appropriate response as all, but you need to take into consideration that this artist is also a human being. There's a chance because payment was due by the 1st that perhaps they were counting on it for rent or other bills. Not all artist draw just for fun. While you had a genuine reason to back out, it could have really caught them off guard, and they made a poor choice in replying rudely.

My rule of thumb with people is that you just don't know their complete story as to why they act out, and so taking every action as personal attack isn't always helpful for one's own sanity.

I am willing to admit I do not know much about the situation at all, and that I could be utterly and completely wrong, and they are just a rude asshole. Either way it was most like not really about you since knowing you so well I doubt you'd ever do much with a malice intent, so bare that in mind for your own sanity's sake.

I agree with this. They could have overreacted because they were counting on the money, or they could just be a jerk. Not that it's acceptable behaviour, but we ARE human/fallible/imperfect.

Yeah you know how I am hun i wouldn't ever do anything that would go against the artist. Thats why i noted them ahead of time so they could get the money they need in time.

Yikes bad response from rude a****t. Speaking as an artist that is currently living off of commissions that still isn't an acceptable response. Wheres the professionalism? Granted Ferallemoon has a point and I know the frustration of having someone back out last minute for both BS and legit reasons. I just cant justify the response they gave you. All in all you did give advance warning at least as much as I would ask for if I were them but everyone is different. The real professionals will either ask if you want to postpone the work and if you still want to cancel simply will move on and thank you for the patronage. Life happens and you cant react badly to a customer regardless of if its a legit or BS reason all that does is harm your business.

At least you weren't out any money before finding out the kind of person you were dealing with.
