Coming out as furry to a friend
As anyone who read my last journal entry would know, I mentioned that after the Monday night of MFX, I was inspired to come out as furry to a close friend of mine.
So here's how it went down...
Shortly after getting home on Tuesday early-arvo, I got a call from a good friend of mine, Alex, asking me if I wanted to catch up over a game of pool, like we normally do. I said sure, and when he asked me what I'd been up to, I said "I've just had the most amazing weekend of my life." "Oh really?" "Yeah, but I'll tell you everything at pool."
So at pool, he asked me, "So what was so amazing about this weekend?" Before I preceded to try and explain, just what furry is, I asked him "Have you seen CSI or Back To You?", to which he replied, no, I then, using Kage's "Don't ask us what we are, but what we were" monologue (something else that inspired me into coming out as furry) explained what furry is, although unfortunately, with probably only about 60% the confidence from the original delivery, but I think it got my point across.
After explaining that, I then went into telling him what Midfur was, and how it originally started off as just a small, casual meet ten years ago, and how it had now turned into a fully fledged convention, with panel discussions, entertainment in the evenings, a dealers den for artists selling their work and a Gala Ball at the Hi-Fi. He seemed rather interested in this sub-culture and how it attracted me. He asked how long I'd been a member ("They don't give you a card Alex"), what happens at meets. I explained to him about fursonas, how it's a largely on-line based community.
So after all this, and many more questions, he said "Sounds like something Daniel (another friend of ours) would be interested in." I laughed, though about it for a second, and said "You, know, you're probably right!"
So there you go, one down, god knows how many more to go, but I think it went quite well, though I think I'm going to have to practice quoting Kage a bit more first before I tell any more friends.
Take care everyone, and have a merry christmas!
