Arjuna horror flick challenge. Win a free sketch!

NOTE: Please read entire journal. Getting a lot of people posting stuff that is simply not applicable to the contest.
I did this once before and it worked out good. The movie that won it wasn't even really horror, more of a thriller but the premise was horrific enough. It was Dead Calm, not even really a horror movie but it worked so I am flexible on movies not generally thought of as horror but they have to be horrific in some way. I would even argue that Dead Calm is a psychological horror/thriller movie.
I'll preface this with I'm a horror film/game/book nut. Especially film. I watch tons of horror films, for all i know i've seen every horror flick worth seeing at this point which is why i have to resort to shenanigans like this. I have seen possibly close to or more than 2000 horror flicks. So I would probably not suggest horror staples like Alien or The Shining because i guaranteed have seen them.
If you can recommend me a horror movie I have not seen, I watch it and I like it, I will draw you a free sketch of your character or a character of your choosing. I will be fair, if i genuinely enjoy the movie I will definitely admit it. If I absolutely hate it halfway through i might not finish it. I've seen enough that i know what i like. Shit, i didn't like sleepaway camp but i finished it and the ending totally salvaged the movie so i won't rush to judgement too bad.
For me to like it enough to choose it as the winner it must get a reaction out of me, fear, dread, uncomfortable anticipation or just general unease/unnerve. It doesn't need to be in my top ten or scare the shit out of me. BUt i have to enjoy it and it has to get a visceral reaction out me like that. Ideally it will scare the living shit out of me but that's incredibly rare.

Only real rules are as follows:
1. I only draw male or females of reasonable proportions. See my gallery for what i'm generally comfortable with.
2. Females with human bits and males with human, equine or canine bits. No herms, no weird spiky death cocks and no fortune cookies. No offense if that's your thing but it's just not mine so I don't draw them.
3. It has to be a feature length movie or at least 60 minutes long, shorts are cool but not what I'm looking for.
4. Hard mode.....it has to be in english or english dubbed. I simply can't read subtitles while I work. No silent films either. Foreign films are great but i need english. If you have a link to a foreign flick with a good english dub lay it on me.
5. Less hard mode. As I write this I'm watching the supposed lost aussie psychological horror classic Wake Up In Fright so no suggesting that :P

My tastes? I love haunted house movies like The Haunting (1963), The Changeling, and yeah, The first couple Paranormal Activity movies. Haunted house movies are by far my favorite. I love dark movies and horror/suspense thrillers like silence of the lambs but emphasis on the horror. I love psychological horror like Spoorloos or Jacob's Ladder. I like some slasher movies but gore alone does nothing for me. I actually can't stand gore porn movies but slashers like Suspiria, Black Christmas, even some of the Scream movies or the first friday the 13th are fine if they have a little subtlety/atmosphere. I love old horror movies like Night of the Demon I love new horror movies like the Evil Dead remake.
I want to watch something that will best case scenario be genuinely scary but i'll settle for unnerving or unsettling.
What i don't like is gore porn flicks and torture porn flicks like the SAW series or Hostel. I hate horror comedies. I can stand some funny moments but I'm looking generally for dead serious horror.
So yeah. Whether you want a pic or not these threads are always fun. Toss out some names and don't be offended if i've seen every single thing you mention haha.

I could also recommend An Inconvenient Truth. It's not very scary, but there's Gore in almost every scene.
I did very much enjoy an inconvenient truth and it's probably one of the scariest movies mentioned here. Just not the kind of scary i'm looking for lol.
I can only think of one more - Maniac. Serial killer movie with Elijah Wood as the main guy.
Suspiria
Blood and Black Lace
Sightseers
You've probably seen them all though!
I don't think i've ever liked a Bava movie but i'd give it a try if it was in fact english.
You're Next was surprisingly good if you've never seen that. Saw that recently.
Other relatively unknown movies:
- The Tunnel: a 2011 Australian movie shot in a documentary-style about a TV troupe exploring an underground network of abandoned railway tunnels. Not that original, but very atmospheric and tense, does its job really well.
- Eden Lake: a 2008 British thriller-horror about a newlywed couple tormented by a gang of violent youths all around the eponymous lake. Nice cinematography, quite scary and upsetting, and it has Michael Fassbender in it (before he became famous).
- Dog Soldiers: this one you've probably seen, but it's still worth mentioning... Simply one of the best werewolf movies ever made, in my modest opinion.
- Kill List: another British movie; this one starts as a crime thriller and slowly becomes a horror movie.
- Session 9: a haunted house movie, except it's set in an abandoned asylum... that maybe isn't haunted at all.
- Hour of the Wolf: the only horror movie made by legendary director Ingmar Bergman (well, there's also "The Virgin Spring", but... that was based on a true story, supposedly), about a couple taking refuge on a remote island where strange denizens dwell. It's a bit of a slow burner, but the atmosphere is eerie and seriously creepy.
Unfortunately I have seen all of those. Glad somebody else has seen The Tunnel though, i loved that movie.
Um... Okay, another few titles:
- Bug (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470705/)
- The Addiction (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112288/) although I guess this one is more "artsy" than creepy, but has its moments.
- 11:14 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0331811) this one is a thriller, but I love the "jigsaw" structure of the plot and how everything comes to a close in the end.
- The Tenant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074811) this is a classic, since it's by Roman Polanski so you've probably seen it, but... it always creeps me out. Must be because it's about paranoia.
- Pontypool (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226681) this one is really clever, one of the best "zombie apocalypse" movies I've seen.
- Shadow of the Vampire (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0189998) a horror drama about the making of the legendary silent horror movie Nosferatu.
- Uzumaki (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244870) a Japanese horror movie inspired by a manga, about a city where everything (from houses to plants to living creatures) starts developing spiral patterns for some undetermined reason. The manga is way creepier (and very Lovecraftian), but the movie is still a decent flick.
Knew of 11:14 but you'de be the first to consider it a horror movie lol. I'll take a look.
Tenant/pontypool seen, great movies. Seen shadow of the vampire, i enjoyed it, not really the type of horror flick i'm after though.
Uzumaki is unfortuantely foreign language and not applicable. I've been wanting to see it though. If you know of a dub so i can watch/listen to it while i work feel free to link me.
Other titles that came to mind in the meantime:
- The Exorcist III. Which should actually be titled "Legion", but whatever, the executive producers were assholes. It doesn't have anything to do with Exorcist II (thank god) and I think it's one of the most underrated horror movies ever. One murder scene in particular is one of the most unnerving scenes I've ever seen.
- the first two Ginger Snaps movie.
- The Signal.
- Possession, the 1981 one. Even if it was shot in France, I'm pretty sure it was also shot in English (the male lead is Sam Neill).
- the three movies directed by Philip Ridley, namely "Reflecting Skin", "The Passion of Darkly Noon" and "Heartless". Mentioning those three mostly because they are quite obscure and had a quite unique style, although they are horror movies.
- Society, by Brian Yuzna, even though I'm pretty sure you've seen this one already.
Seen the ginger snaps movies, well done but not the type of horror i'm looking for.
The signal started out amazing till it became a zany comedy. I left it with a bad taste in my mouth to be honest.
Seen Possession. Interesting movie but also not really the type of horror i'm looking for. It was super disturbing though.
seen reflecting skin and heartless, both good movies, not really the type of horror i'm looking for. I'll look into darkly noon.
People keep mentioning society. Premise and response to it never made me think it would be my cup of tea but i'll give it a shot.
Yesterday I watched Spoorloos, by the way. Not what I imagined it to be, but very creepy and disconcerting nonetheless... So thanks for the suggestion!
Do you have some other movies you feel like suggesting to me? I know it's should be the other way round, but... Since you have such an extensive knowledge on the matter, maybe you have other movies you think should be worth watching!
Resolution is a recent favorite. Definitely one of the best most fascinating horror movies i've seen in years. If you liked cabin in the woods thematically but hated the fact it was a goofy comedy as oppose dto a serious horror movie, you'll LOVE resolution.
I assume you've seen both teh *Rec movies, they're fantastic.
The Changeling is one a shocking amount of people haven't seen.
The Awakening i really enjoyed, kindof a slow burner.
Really liked The Tunnel
Pulse is one of the only japanese horror movies i've really liked
The Poughkeepsie tapes is a good one, also an "I need a shower after that." movie.
Dead End was good imo.
Kill List was awesome.
Oh shit, Lake Mungo, fantastic movie.
Splinter is a fantastic monster horror movie.
Triangle is a VERY interesting and just original horror movie.
House of the Devil.
Any of these are worth a watch. If you need more titles i could probably think of some more. I want as many people to watch resolution as possible though.
Really wanted to see The Changeling (I've only seen the wheelchair scene during a documentary about horror movies and creeped me out a lot), The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Lake Mungo. House of the Devil seemed very interesting because the way it was shot and produced, too. I knew just the poster from Splinter but it seemed too... "bloody" for my taste. I tend not to like that kind of "visceral" horror, but maybe it's just a wrong impression coming from the poster.
Never heard of Dead End (seems relatively interesting) and definitely never heard of Resolution (although it seems very interesting)! To be honest, I absolutely LOVE Cabin in the Woods, it's one of my favorite movies of the past five years.
Thanks for the advice, though! I'll definitely try and see the movies I haven't seen yet.
Another movie that caught my attention lately, even though it still isn't out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83PpryYHHeY
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2870612/
From the trailer, it looks pretty promising and something you might like. You know, as a future reference!
- The Woman in Black
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596365
Oh, yeah, have you seen Haunter by Vincenzo Natali? You know, the director of Cube. Since he did some interesting flicks I am quite interested in seeing it, since it appears to be a ghost/horror story.
I'll take a look
I"m honestly not sure if i've liked ANY italian horror not done by argento. I watch all the classics that come up over and over again and they just do nothing for me, things by bava and the other giallo mainstays.
I know you dont likecomidies but cabin tn the woods is worth alook esepcailyl if youliekd the evil dead series
If you like that, you should really see Resolution. They sorta try to accomplish artistically what cabin in the woods tried to but Resolution actually succeeds at being a great horror movie.
I think Sole Survivor was the better horror flick but it's pretty dated. I am a ghost gets points for uniqueness and some good atmosphere. I got two more i'm looking for that are proving not easy to find.
Either way. Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I did enjoy it and it was the type of horror I was looking for unlike most of the other entries lol.
I don't know if it is available in English dub, but subtitles have always been a common standard here.
Only vampire movie i've really loved is the original salem's lot. At least loved on the level of a "scary" horror movie.
Except domestic comedies, those are pretty yuck over here.
And it's no problem, I just thought I'd try to oblige.
others: 'Pontypool', 'The Giant Leeches', 'Otto, Or, Up With Dead People', 'Hausu'...
Pontypool however was great. I have seen it unfortunately.
What about... 'Pandorum', 'Escape From Tomorrow' (more of a psychological thriller, but it's pretty freaky?), 'The Road' (bleak and powerful), 'The Beyond' (has an English dub I think), oh, and 'Session 9'.
If you've seen all of these then that's cool because I think they're all pretty neat =D
An dit's cool. if you think of any other suggestions feel free to chime in.
Dead Of Night
Children Of The Damned
Peeping Tom
V/H/S 2
Long Weekend
Link
Antichrist
...I don't think I've seen any others that aren't mega-obvious ;~; I HAVE FAILED YOU
As for TV stuff, Charlie Brooker's Twilight Zone-style anthology 'Black Mirror' has some really good psychological stuff going on, especially the instalment '15 Million Credits'.
I haven't really heard anyone talk about it, but I thought it was pretty good.
If psychological thrillers count I'd also recommend "Perfect Blue". XP
Seen perfect blue also but that's in japanese. It's gotta be english anyways. Perfect blue is fantastic though. Reminded me of mulholland drive which is probably my favorite movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1457767/
and it stars Lili Taylor who also starred in that other ghost story type movie 'The Haunting' so think ya really might like it :)
...an if ya do happen ta think it worth inspirin' enough ta draw m'character pic... ya already know by now m'plenty pleased enough at the yummily large size ya already draw genitals (especially balls) so ya pretty much know I'd be droolin' over whatever ya came up with {:P~~~
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanish....._on_7th_Street
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1187064/
Kazam! (hey that's not a horror movie!... Have ya seen Shakeal act? -'Scary Movie' LOL ;)
I didn't like vanishing on 7th street, i think i walked out on it.
Glad you liked Triangle though, that movie is AWESOME.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455760/
What I particularly liked about this movie was not only was/is it more of a ghost story... but that it also has a kinda tie-in background sorta 'pre-history' of the one tricycle ridin' doll from the 'Saw' movies (I know ya said ya didn't like that series but 'Dead Silence' does kinda give ya that explanatory reason as ta why everyone thinks that that tricycle ridin' doll seems even creepier than ya think it oughtta be heh...
well aside from that I'll jus' go 'head an wave the white flag on this... an maybe jus' settle fer sometimes swappin' horror movie suggestions back an forth with ya now an then seein' as how we both like'em so much... I'd probably drive ya nuts after awhile though cause I do like 'horridy' as I call it... 'horror' that done so over the top ya couldn't possibly take it seriously... guess it's m'corny werewolf nature that way heh ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touris.....rap_%28film%29
(which I think was one'a the 'first' horror movies I recall goin' out ta see by m'self... an really won't help if yer already creeped out by manniquins heh)
and: http://www.fandango.com/eatenalive_.....17/plotsummary
which I recall watchin' a few years back fer the first time though it's WAY older'n that... an although I didn't find the movie itself ta be all that 'scary' the scariest thing about it was seein' a young (well youngER) Robert Englund (the legendary Freddy Krueger himself) as a backwoods cracker wearin' jus' his pants an a white 'wifebeater' an thinkin' ta m'self wow his body really ain't all that bad... but then he still has his face which seems SO mismatched ta his physique that it's perhaps the scariest part of the movie LOL ;)
I've seen part of eaten alive and it didn't really grab me unfortunately.
Ok Ok I know that ain't fair... an that m'probably never gonna see m'fursona as drawn by yer exquisite pencilwork... can't say I didn't give it the ol' college try... or that I'll always love yer art... especially how yummilicious ya make the balls look on all yer males {:)
If i hadn't seen almost every good horror movie ever made i wouldn't need to offer free shit to get suggestions lol.
I don't exaggerate when i say i've seen a lot of horror movies.
Other than the fact i've seen it :P Kudos to you though, somehow almost nobody seems to have. It's an amazing horror flick.
Oh well, since no one seems to have mentioned these, what about Phantasm or Room 1408?
Yeah, the monsters are well-done and cool-looking, but to me it's always been about paranoia.
I've never seen it myself, but a buddy of mine recommended it to me not too long ago.
Oh well. At least I know to avoid it. Thanks. :>
1983'S The Lift by Dick Maas.
Amsterdamned
Sint
uhmm Sorority Row
Children of the Corn
Mama
Evil Dead (The original film and also the modern Remake)
It's Alive
George Romero's Land of the Dead
I'll put them in the "maybe" list lol. Thanks though!
Santa Sangre
Dawn of the Dead
Halloween - 1978
Diabolique - 1955
It's a real cool psychological thriller, quite dark. It's more on the fringe of the horror genre like Silent of the Lambs, but quite a nice character study and pretty engaging, though typicall for a german movie it drags on a bit at times.
If you liked 'The Strangers' then maybe the French movie Ils ( Them ) could interest you http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465203/
One flick that I saw ages ago in a sneak preview and that might be a little gem is the spanish "El orfanato" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/
definitely a big recommendation if you like spooky suspense horror. Also, another soon to be victim of the 'American Remake' syndrome :)
Men of the Sun
I saw this film once. And will never see it again. It freaked me that much! I am still unsure how they pulled off the effects or if it was really filmed. (Chinese made in the late 70s early 80s)
The English dub of '.REC' is pretty damned good, I enjoyed that.
A tad cheesy but still fairly entertaining is 'BOO', I've seen that multiple times.
'Resident Evil' is a mix of horror and action, I suppose, but it's fairly good, though you've probably seen that already.
'Ghost Ship' was pretty kickass.
If I remember any others I've seen I'll add 'em!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446719/
Another that I find really frightening is the film Sole Survivor (1983). It's slow, but it's kind of mysterious and builds tension well.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181012/
The acting was fairly bad often, cinematography not great but good deliberate pacing and atmosphere and a solid premise goes a long way in a horror flick. I wonder if it was the inspiration for the Final Destination movies, premise wise they're almost identical. I Would love a remake of Sole Survivor with a bit more budget or talent.
I'm almost certain this must have inspired Final Destination. But I'm glad Sole Survivor isn't as over the top and schlocky, haha.
I spit on your grave,
Blackula,
Vampire in Brooklyn,
Deadly Friend
A quick glance at the former two i think i'll pass. Don't look at all what i'm looking for.
Had never heard of deadly friend. I generally hate wes craven but i'll check it out.
Also check
ganool.com/category/horror
It's a download-movies site I go to on a regular basis, they have a lot of crap and a lot of good, but they include foreign flicks from all over the world so you're almost guaranteed to see titles you've never heard of before. The farther back you go the more likely the links died but at least it's a library reference for you to track down elsewhere
It's an independent film, and so INCREDIBLY bad that it's actually kinda almost fun.
Works best when you have friends with you to laugh and make comments.
I assume you've seen all of the John Carpenter classics, especially Prince of Darkness?
I've seen most of his movies and those are the only 3 that i ever really liked. Thing, halloween and madness.
How about Burnt Offerings?
Ghost Watch (a 1992 British horror that was one of the first mockumentories)
Grave Encounters
The Objective
Have you seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)? It's one of the best silent horror films.
The Bad Seed
The Legend of Hell House
The Messiah of Evil
Christmas Evil (more of a psychological thriller)
I'd also throw in Where the Dead go to Die. But it is more of just a shock movie. It does it's job but may not be up your alley.
There's also Last House on dead end Street, but you've most likey seen it/not up your alley.
Grace
Cold Prey (foreign, unsure if it's dubbed)
Audition (also foreign)
Session 9
These all sound good from what I can gather on them, and aren't common horror films, so maybe you'll enjoy them.
Can't find a dub of cold prey, been wanting to see it though.
I seem to be one of the only horror fans that HATED audition, session 9 is great though, but i have definitely seen it. Thanks though!
Interesting flick though. I've seen everything lynch has done.
I had t discuss with some friends, but here:
Splinter
My Little Eye
Lake Mungo
and
Frailty
Insanity, Madness, Claustraphobia, and terrrorrrrr (Those are descriptions, not movie titles)
The Uninvited 1944
The Innocents 1963
The Changeling 1980
I'll watch the uninvited. People ahve said it's aged really poorly and i think that's what kept me from finally watching it. I'll give it a shot though since you like the changeling.
If you like old horror, check out Night of the Demon. Just ignore the first 30 seconds of the movie which are an unfortunate decision by the director, it's a great old classic horror flick that holds up very well.
I've not seen that movie in over 30 years and I still remember those demon's.
Wait until dark is a suspense thriller with Hepburn.
...
Oh wait, that's horrible! Sorry. x3
The Innkeepers
The Pact
Absentia
Since it's the first entry i've watched you are technically in the lead though. Thanks for suggesting it!
I hope it was worth the time watching, at least. I'll wrack my (small, bird) brain for any other (more horror) flicks I've seen over the years.
Hey! Ever see "Flatliners"? I checked and it's described as a " sci-fi-drama-thriller". I remember seeing it in the theatre as a kid and it definitely had some good scary/ horror to it, not to mention an all-star cast: Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt.
