Last night I was flipping through channels around a quarter to twelve trying to find something decent to watch, then I stumble upon MTV! Lord knows why, since I haven't bothered watching that channel after the 90s but, something caught my eye, it was their original show, True Life. The show was covering three different lifestyles around the U.S. one of which was about an 18 year old girl who was a furry from California.
I was rather surprised by her story, since all the stories are told from the person(s) perspective and not by the network itself. She was your average high school student, who lived at home and engaged in drawing furry art, and even designing and making he own fursuits. When she first found out about the fandom she was like most people in the general public and thought all we did was dress up in weird animal suits and have sex, until later on when she discovered more about the fandom she was instantly drawn into it.
The cool thing is both of her parents are super supportive of her being a furry, although her mom still likes to tease her about being a fur, but still supportive nonetheless. This girl was desperately trying to find other furs in her area but was coming up short, so she struck out to San Fransico for the Chinese New Year in China Town to see if she could meet any furs, while she was in one of her several fursuits she had made, this of a dragon.
Although she had gotten a lot of attention from parade goers with her suit and getting pics taken, she did not however find any other furries that day. Her last resort was to attend a convention, her parents helped her along and found her a con she could go to without interfering her going to school, so they picked Rocky Mountain Fur Con. Her parents even went along with her to the con, and helped her around with her suit!
In the end, she did meet several furs at the con and made fast friends with them, hung out with them during the con, and she ended up meeting a few more furries at the college she's now attending.
I was happy to see this story on so many levels, one of which being that it wasn't recorded by a mainstream network or done as a TV talk show, it was just a natural girl who told her own story of how she found the fandom and got to where she is at now. Secondly, her parents! These were the coolest parents I have seen by far of supporting their childs lifestyle of being a furry. They did not bash the fandom, they did not lecture their daughter about the possible dangers, or views others will have of her. They supported her for what she loved, they complimented her abilities of make her own suits, and the suits themselves.
She even had one lady in her town commission her to make a partial suit for a Halloween party, that part was pretty cool to see as well because it gave the woman such joy of owning a partial suit, but it also gave the girl a lot of confidence, and pride into her work that she does.
All in all it was a very intersting story, I just wish more people out there could watch this and see what the fandom is really like instead of labeling us as "freaks" and "degenerates", and for parents or families of furries to be a little more supportive of us and our lifestyle.
