-Story Updates:
After the fight with the Mindflayers, the party regrouped and made for Dreadful City. There, we discovered that our NPC friends Thiss, Tiburoun, and Silbastian had befriended a wizard and professional masseur named Zane. Silbastian had purchased several adjoining buildings and begun a hospital while we were away, and Zane had been helping with that.
Since we left, not only had the time-rifts opened up throughout the city, but horrible monsters started coming out of them! There were Jellyfish-like monsters that could make themselves immune to physical attacks, and terrible invisible flesh-eating worms- blech!
After a fight with some jellyfish-things, the party was divided. Weiss spent some time in the hospital as he was still injured from the exploding spaceship, and Ark, Michael, and Sam stayed to help while Duke, Zane, and Gruffydd went to check on some gnoll-vagrants who set up camp near one of the rifts.
While this was happening, three little gnomes suddenly appeared in the tavern! Everyone went to meet and question them. They appeared similar in some ways to the monsters we'd been fighting- able to link their minds into one, and to turn strangely hazy-blue and invulnerable.
It turns out the Mindflayers ("The Masters") have been using time-rifts to trap living beings and enslave them or feed on them. The prisoners suffer side effects and gain strange abilities (like the gnomes display) that help them sense the flow of time, and locations of rifts and portals. The gnomes can also sense what's been altered or ruined by tampering with time, and identifying these key points will help us do our job to put things right!
During our discussions with them, we talked about the mindflayer in the world of Duke's memories that we defeated. It seems somehow The Masters had an interest in Duke's tribe- and there's a chance the tribe is not really dead! They may be prisoners, or they may be... livestock... for the mindflayers to feed upon- but there's a chance they're not all dead. Duke is even more anxious to begin our quest.
The gnomes located the point of an entrance-portal through time... but it's a one-way trip... and there's no telling what time-period it reaches! Not knowing what else to do, but knowing every time period is being attacked, the group decided to use the portal and do what we could on the other side. Michael and Ark decided to bring the Green Lady's remains, as Ark had promised her to plant them, and they required Michael's blood to fertilize them, being the Green Lady's father. There's a chance we'll wind up in the wrong time to do this, but they brought the remains just in case!
After asking the gnomes to come with us (they agreed) we travelled through Dreadful City to the location of the portal- a weird building filled with large holding-tanks, like the ones in the Doppelganger lab. We carefully explored the area, and discovered that the holding tanks contained powerful owlbears! All the more reason to proceed carefully-
Suddenly a new rift began to open, right inside the building! Using the gnomes' ability to sense the portal, we ran past it, eager to escape before more monsters emerged. We found a control panel, and hoped it would open the portal for us! Ark searched it for traps and Gruffydd did his best to be cautious as well, but the Doppelganger construction was too clever, and spotted them as foreign organisms, exploding fire over them and releasing the angry owlbears to attack!
The fight was tough, but everyone fought to the best of their abilities. Michael and Sam revealed new holy spells and abilities they had never used, including some quick-cast Paladin spells right in the middle of battle and Sam creating a magical snowstorm for us to hide in.
Duke and Weiss were their usual swirling maelstrom of blades, arrows, and destruction- Ark and Gruffydd used stealth, magic, and fire to aid the party and crush the threats to our safety- and Zane revealed himself to be quite the battle-mage, using a magical freezing quarterstaff and casting at close range.
Finally all of the owlbears lay dead, though other containment-tubes remained closed, hiding their contents... and still no sign of the time-portal or how to open it!
