"They are not like us, and we will never understand them" also applies to racial, religious, ethnic, and national differences. Perhaps if people were more willing to accept that being different doesn't always mean being a threat, there wouldn't be as much suffering, by humans and other life.
There's no reason to assume aliens will want to talk or trade. Same with /Avatar/ and /Starship Troopers/, humans should either stay home, or bypass natives. And no law of life says we humans need to survive, that's just hubris.
I wonder if H.R. wrote sci-fi.
