I think it's like... both? Paws is ambiguous, for me. That's why we have feetpaws and handpaws.

At least I'm not a complete idiot for asking. I guess one could specify it that way, but it doesn't sound all that good in writing.

"he took my handpaw and pulled me out of the pit" or "she gently rubbed her footpaw against my ankle" just seems a bit clunky.

But, if it's ambiguous, then who cares. At least I can get away with it (probably).
