...these type of cartoons always reminded me that the great industrial mobilization had two sides to it.
The one side was the workers themselves. They weren't quite as cheery as the cartoons all depicted but many, many folks - including quite a few nontraditional groups (Rosie the Riveter, anyone?) stepped up to the plate. Those that didn't work in the factories rationed. They grumbled about it, but they did it.
On the other side were the owners of the factories. Some went along with the conversion to wartime production with patriotic fervor. But many more had to more or less be threatened with government confiscation, imprisonment, or worse before they switched from profit to production. At least a few of them were Nazi supporters and financiers themselves.
But the end result could not be denied. Early in the war, the Germans had far superior equipment and better tactics, but we more or less buried them with sheer numbers and production capacity. As the war wore on, we developed equipment every bit as good or better then they fielded. Matched with our production capacity, "V" eventually became the reality - but at a terrible price.
