World Cup rant
I know there aren't a lot of people who get all that excited about soccer or the World Cup, but at least hear me out! This has been bothering me for quite some time now.
First off, I love the World Cup. I love that people around the world can speak one language, and that is soccer. Players from all across the globe all competing in teams that representing their country to gain the final prize. There something more exhilarating to it than the Olympics, at least for me. I look forward to it every time it comes around and get so pumped I nearly burst from excitement. Last time the World Cup was happening, my phone had to be confiscated so I could act civilized and do my job as a bridesmaid in a wedding. Complete torture since Germany was playing during the wedding.
The World Cup is being held in Brazil this year and to be honest, this is the first time I'm meeting my favorite event with some bitterness. Brazil is in a terrible crisis in terms of education, health , and other businesses that are essential to their economy. FIFA gave them money to host the world cup, but they spent even more than necessary and didn't even do a quality job setting up the stadiums. They threw indigenous people off of the little land that was left to them after settlers took over. Kids are going hungry and people are protesting, but nothing is going to stop the World Cup from taking place in 15 days.
I'm torn. People are literally suffering because of this event that is supposed to be a celebration of people coming together. I hate it so much. I've been looking forward to this World Cup for so long, especially since Iran made the cut. And I've been bragging for four years about how Germany is going to take the cup this time. What do I do? I'm angry about what's happening, but I want to watch it at the same time. I'm constantly posting about the protests on tumblr and I'm being mindful of what I buy so that my money doesn't go to the World Cup at all this year. I bring it up in conversations whenever I can without drowning people in information to the point they lose interest. But is all this enough? If I still plan on watching the World Cup, does that make me a hypocrite? Am I a bad person for still choosing to watch the event that an entire country went into chaos for in order to create it? Like I'm a person from the Capitol watching the Hunger Games.
I hate that I have to debate my love for the World Cup to begin with. I hate that this is happening. I hate that people are suffering. I wish it would stop.
