Anyone have stories and/or pairings for their hallci characters? I'd like to hear about them!

I have a story for my halici, Merit! She was rescued from a slave trader when she was a baby and now lives with a librarian who studies manmade magic in his free time. When she hits her late teenage years, she becomes curious about her own history and wants to seek out her homeland, but she doesn't know enough about her own species to know where she came from. An interaction with a Starteller via dreams gives her a good lead, and she sets off across the wilderness with another friend to find her home. Along the way she encounters some oddballs and a deity who guide her in the right direction. Typical coming-of-age journey story...
This takes place in a world where manmade magic is developing. It still isn't as good as "natural" magic, but there's tension developing between nonmagical and magical species. Plus Merit knows more manmade magic than natural magic thanks to her caretaker, even though she has more than enough natural power to tap into, which she later becomes really insecure about.
Have you come up with anything for yours?? I'd love to hear about it ;w;
To give you the run down Im not really good at finding a setting for a story or making stories period LOL
However what i do have related to my hallici is that she grew up in a family that exploited her because of her rare traits/ natural talent. They used her as a trophy and always kept raising their expectations. Initially she was overwhelmed and would cry a lot. Eventually she steeled her heart and rose above expectations. So she grew up to be cruel and judgmental of others.
Aside from that I really dont know what im doing LOL
Family is an excellent chassis for conflict because it's so personal for the character and creator, and readers can relate to it too.
Hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions about it ;o;!! I wanna see you make it work for her///
The fact she becomes cruel after suffering harsh treatment from her family is really intriguing. Maybe you could use that to build her out even more?? Like, have you thought about why she steeled her heart? Did she change because of a specific event, or maybe because of the influence of a third party or even an object? Was it by or against her will, and is it temporary?
And this might seem unrelated at first LOL but does she have access to something that makes her happy or fulfilled, or not? What does she want to achieve in the near future (not necessarily life aspiration) and even within the next day (indulgence, food)? If you give her "needs," the force that drives her through scenes in a story naturally sprouts from them. Then you can create external conflicts that pull her out of her default zone and/or impede her progress (family doesn't necessarily have to be one of them), and farther down the line, more characters with their own needs for mutual support or rivalry...
As for setting, you can think of your favorite story/media and take whatever you like from their world, then tweak and use it for yourself LOL there's very little originality in settings anymore, so IMO it's OK to be shamelessly indulgent with it :3c
You're not alone |D... I'm a writer and I have trouble sometimes too. It's harder when the character you're working with is missing context. But yours is partially there already because she has a family that affects her, so keep going!!
