A Simple Request

For those that haven't seen, there's a less than enthralling picture that someone drew of Molly along with a host of males lining up for fun. I'm not going to link to it, if you want to see it, you can find it fairly easily.
The issue lies in the fact that this person not only didn't ask to use Molly or several other of my characters, but he went and borrowed over a dozen other people's characters and didn't ask to use them in the image either. He's claiming that it's 'fanart', and while that's true, there's a certain courtesy involved in asking permission to use someone's character. It doesn't even take a minute to send out a little note to ask. I did it myself earlier last week, and had a nice conversation with an artist who had never been asked before about commissioning a character of hers.
I've had several people ask if they could have Molly drawn in a commission they want, and I've always said yes. The important point is just to ask. Thank you.

Also, the pic that Koyote mentioned is simply abysmal and hardly something that I would love to see uploaded.
You could have not gotten any backlash like with those previous images you drew, as you said at least. But you could have, and this time you did. And honestly, you could have prevented it by asking their permission, being afraid to be refused isn't a good excuse to not ask and do it anyway.
Asking permission is important for other reasons too. What if the character you're drawing has rules or restrictions you weren't aware of? You know the sort of things Molly likes from Koyote's art, but what if she had a limit to the number of people she was willing to be with at once? What if the other people you featured in the pic were fine with Molly, but had taboos against being featured with a dozen other naked guys? There are an infinite number of possibilities like this, and asking first is the only way to know.
While I'm sure your intentions were good, it's not always a nice surprise to give someone gift art without permission. Sometimes it's disrespectful to them and their characters, and the fact that you claim the problem is that you're just not talented enough shows you don't quite fully understand why you're in the wrong.
Now stop focusing on me. This isn't even about me.
Going on and our of the way to continue to talk really very hurtful things about someone's art after they've already removed your character seems like a real kick in the face while they're already down, is that really necessary? All artists have to start somewhere...
I'm pretty disheartened to see many people I and my wife know and have even worked for in the past taking part in this ;_;
It's probably about how mature you handle such situations and how emotionally invested you are in that regard. I don't doubt that I'm hardly the most mature person around. I mean, I feel flattered when I see such pieces of Mei..

But something I don't see that way, is about "you have to start out somewhere". Indeed, you have. By actually learning how to draw in general, not by simply grabbing character left and right and putting them into situations that are neither flattering or tasteful.
What can and should have been done?
Would it have been nice to have some notice? Yes. Is it worth starting a bunch of drama? No. Could this have been or still be resolved without being super petty? Yes.
Simple fact is, its fan art, its free. People aren't being hurt intentionally, people are choosing to be "Hurt".
Lessons to be learned. Ask first. If something happens you don't like, solve it internally before releasing it to the public.
Would have been nice to have permission asked.
I was a bit miffed. But then went Meh.
Am I going to request that this person be banned to all hell? No.
People all start somewhere with their art.
Should this blow up into a drama fest? No, because its pointless.
